Mahindra-acquired Pininfarina will make its debut as a manufacturer to take on Tesla.
Italian car design house, Pininfarina will soon turn into a proper vehicle manufacturer. The company is likely to launch all-electric models only that will rival offerings from Tesla. Pininfarina’s Chairman and MD stated, “We are hoping to build a really high-end, crowd-pleasing Pininfarina electric – that’s in the works.”
Back in 2015, Mahindra acquired the Pininfarina brand that’s well-known for designing some of the iconic Ferrari models. Plans of turning into a manufacturer isn’t new to Pininfarina, in fact the founders of the company too wanted the same. When Mahindra was in the process of buying the brand, it made a promise to fulfil those dreams.
Pininfarina will get inputs from Mahindra’s Formula-E and electrics in general. Currently, the plan is to have at least one sedan, one SUV and one hatchback or a crossover in the initial 3-5 years timeline. The Pininfarina-branded car is likely to be unveiled initially at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018. Sales are likely to commence first in the US and Western Europe markets.
Mahindra currently offers EVs in the mass-market segments in India and it is highly likely that they will launch the new Pininfarina EVs in India too.
