In a market increasingly dominated by SUVs, the Maruti Dzire has emerged as an outlier by becoming India’s bestselling car in FY2026. With total sales of 2.3 lakh units between April 2025 and March 2026, the compact sedan has managed to secure the top position despite SUVs accounting for nearly 66 percent of overall passenger vehicle sales during the same period. This performance highlights that while market trends may shift, customer preferences remain diverse.
Maruti Suzuki’s stronghold in the sedan segment is evident in its 57.2 percent market share in FY2026, a notable increase from 45.8 percent in FY2017. Interestingly, the Dzire is now the only sedan in the company’s portfolio after the discontinuation of the Ciaz.
While some previous sedan buyers are moving towards SUVs and MPVs, a section continues to consider the Dzire, reinforcing the brand’s continued relevance in the segment. The model’s consistent performance also aligns with Maruti’s broader multi-body-style strategy, ensuring presence across different categories even as certain segments shrink.
The company also recorded its highest-ever annual sales during the fiscal year, with total volumes reaching approximately 24.23 lakh units. This includes domestic sales of over 18.61 lakh units and exports of around 4.48 lakh units.
Looking ahead, the passenger vehicle market is expected to grow by around 5 percent in FY2027. Maruti Suzuki has indicated that it will continue to maintain a balanced portfolio across body styles while adopting a technology-agnostic approach, allowing it to respond flexibly to evolving market demands.
