Maruti Suzuki weighs price revision on small cars amid strong demand & exports

Maruti Suzuki India is expected to take a decision shortly on whether to revise prices of its entry-level and small cars, after having implemented deeper price cuts last year following changes in the GST structure. The company had reduced prices beyond the benefit of the revised tax rates to support demand in the small-car segment and encourage first-time vehicle ownership.

After the introduction of the updated GST framework in September last year, the carmaker lowered prices across several mini and compact models, including the Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio and WagonR. These reductions went beyond the tax-related savings and were positioned as part of a broader strategy aimed at improving motorisation levels in the country.

According to senior management at Maruti Suzuki India, the company is now reassessing whether to maintain these additional discounts or revert pricing to levels that reflect only the lower GST rates. A final decision is expected soon, once internal reviews and operational considerations are completed.

The evaluation comes at a time when demand for small cars remains strong. The company currently has a booking backlog of more than one-and-a-half months in the mini segment, even as sales volumes in the category have nearly doubled. Maruti Suzuki is also examining how to address existing customer bookings if prices are revised, including the possibility of continuing current prices for a short period for customers who have already placed orders.

Any announcement on pricing is likely to follow the reopening of Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing facilities, which are presently shut for scheduled annual maintenance.

On the export front, Maruti Suzuki reported its highest-ever annual overseas shipments in calendar year 2025. The company exported nearly 3.95 lakh vehicles during the year, representing growth of over 21 percent compared to the previous year. This performance is expected to retain Maruti Suzuki’s position as India’s largest passenger vehicle exporter for the fifth consecutive year.

The carmaker attributed the export milestone to steady global demand for India-made vehicles and the growing acceptance of the country as a manufacturing hub. In 2025, Maruti Suzuki shipped 18 models to more than 100 international markets.

The year also marked the beginning of exports of Suzuki’s first battery-electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, from the Hansalpur plant. More than 13,000 units were exported to 29 countries, with Europe accounting for a significant share of shipments.
