New Hyundai SUV spotted testing in India with upright and boxy styling

A new Hyundai SUV has been seen testing in Navi Mumbai suggesting that the company is working on an all-new model for the Indian market. The prototype remains heavily camouflaged so its identity is still unknown.

The test vehicle has a tall stance with a square-edged silhouette. Design elements that can be made out include flush-fitting door handles, flared arches that appear to carry plastic cladding, a thick C-pillar and a flat tailgate. The SUV rides on steel wheels and uses MRF tyres.

At the rear the tail-lamp treatment appears similar to Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 with dot-style LEDs, which is also visible on the headlight section for DRLs. Other visible details include a roof spoiler with an integrated stop lamp, a shark-fin antenna, roof rails and a rear bumper that houses the reverse lamps.

Interior images have not been captured yet although the prototype did reveal a wide digital display setup which appears to combine a digital instrument cluster with a touchscreen of roughly 10 inches. The presence of sensors on the exterior mirrors suggests a 360-degree camera system.

The identity of this SUV has not been confirmed. One possibility is that this model is linked to the rugged monocoque SUV with all-wheel drive that Hyundai mentioned in its investor presentation last year. Another possibility is that it could be Hyundai’s derivative of the Kia EV2 which is positioned as Kia’s smallest electric model globally.

This is the first sighting of the SUV on Indian roads so more details are likely to emerge as testing continues.
