New Renault 7-seater MPV spotted testing in Tamil Nadu, will be based on the CMF-A+ platform.

New Renault 7-Seater MPV
The upcoming Renault 7-Seater MPV will rival the Datsun GO+

Renault has started testing its new 7-seater compact MPV (codenamed ‘RBC’) for India. The new MPV will be slotted below the Lodgy in the company’s line-up and is slated for a launch sometime in 2019. The MPV will be based on the cost-effective CMF-A+ platform, a modified version of the Kwid’s platform and will be larger in dimensions than the hatchback.

The wheelbase of the new MPV will be longer than the Kwid but the overall length of the vehicle will still be under four metres for it qualify for the excise benefits on small cars. Despite being under four metres in length, the MPV will come in a 7-seater configuration. The test mule spotted was heavily camouflaged but the picture hints at an angular design. According to sources, the French carmaker will be developing the new MPV as a completely new model and not as derivative or a modified version of the Kwid. The vehicle will go against the likes of the Datsun GO+.

Coming to the interior of the Renault MPV, the cabin is expected to get a completely new dashboard. However, sources suggest that the design of the AC vents and the touchscreen infotainment system are likely to be identical to the Kwid. Sources also suggest there will be more features on offer like rear wiper with washer, rear parking sensors, dual airbags and ABS (latter three as standard).

The new Renault MPV will come powered by an updated version of the Kwid’s BR10 1.0-litre petrol engine with a turbocharger to handle the extra load requirements. Unfortunately, there will not be a diesel engine option as the automaker doesn’t have a small diesel engine to plonk it under the hood of the car. It is expected to be priced in the range of mid-sized hatchbacks (i.e. Rs. 4.2 – 6.2 lakhs, ex-showroom). Renault badly needs a blockbuster product after the Kwid and the new MPV and other products it has in the pipeline could just do the trick.
