The next generation Mahindra Scorpio design is going to retain the rugged look and DNA of the SUV.

Mahindra Scorpio long term
Mahindra Scorpio was first launched in India in 2002

Launched back in June 2002, this SUV from Mahindra still sells roughly about 3000 to 4000 units a month on an average. It’s been in the Indian markets for 15 years now and is currently is in its fifth generation avatar, ladies and gentleman, the Mahindra Scorpio.

The Scorpio initially came with a 2.6-litre, 109 HP, diesel engine and but in later updates made a shift to a smaller but more powerful 2.2-litre, 120 HP, diesel engine. The current generation Scorpio too houses the same mHawk diesel engine. A facelifted version of the current Scorpio is around the corner and it might get a small bump in power.

Since its launch in 2002, Mahindra has sold some 5,80,000 units of the Scorpio, with an average domestic sales of roughly 50,000 vehicles for the last 6 years. Mahindra has also exported over 55,000 units to the international markets. The automaker will be launching the next generation version of the SUV in the coming few years.

However, in today’s mature SUV market, challenges to Mahindra are innumerous. While SUVs account for a third of all the passenger vehicles sales, competition to the automaker is from every nook and corner. Off lately, Mahindra has started losing its share in the UV space with competition from the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Renault Duster, Honda WR-V and Ford EcoSport.

The new generation Scorpio will definitely get major changes to the way it feels and drives but top officials from Mahindra have also stated that the SUV will continue to retain the rugged and tough design theme that it currently follows. This will help the SUV retain its persona. However, we can definitely expect Mahindra to add a lot of modern touches to the vehicle.
