If rumours are to be believed, the Japanese auto manufacturer, Nissan is planning to enter into the small car segment. No, we are not talking about the Micra but a car smaller than that that is going to challenge its competitors like the Hyundai i10 and the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. The small car from Nissan stable, codenamed K2 is likely to be built on the same versatile e V platform on which the Micra has been built. However, the small car will be definitely smaller in terms of overall dimensions.

The K2 is going to be quite similar to the Nissan Micra with a lot of interior parts being common to achieve economies of scale faster in this growing competitive market. Under the hood, the K2 is expected to be powered by the same 1.2 litre 3 cylinder petrol engine with lower power and torque figures to increase fuel economy. A smaller detuned version of the 1.5 litre dCi engine might also be provided along with the gasoline engine. However, any official sketches have been released by the company or test mules spotted in the country.

Nissan India has only one major product launch in the current year, the Evalia. Apart from that the company will focus the current year primarily on dealership expansion and brand image building which is a nice move, considering that the penetration of the company into the Indian auto market isn’t very deep. With the small car coming out from Nissan, it is expected to give some serious competition to the existing players.
