Maruti Suzuki yet again leads the hatchback segment in sales.

September'19 Entry Hatchback Top Selling Cars

The incessant slowdown of the Indian automotive industry does not seem to cease anytime soon. The sales figures of automobiles in the nation continue to plummet with each passing month. Unfortunately, September 2019 has also been another dwindling month for the Indian auto sector.

The hatchback segment divided into 3 sub-segments of entry hatchbacks, compact hatchbacks and premium hatchback, has seen an overall decline in the YoY (Year on year) statistics at -30%, -31% and -25% respectively. Despite the segment selling the most number of units in September 2019, the overall YoY growth has been on the negative side of the spectrum.

As usual Maruti Suzuki has been the leader in all 3 segments for another month. The recently launched S-Presso seems to be a hit as it has garnered a staggering  5006 units in sales, after being launched on the last day of September. However, it still remains behind its sibling, the Alto, which has been the entry hatchback segment leader for the majority of the year. The Renault Kwid has suffered a -46% YoY, selling only 2995 units while the Tata Nano and the Hyundai Eon have failed to sell even a single unit.

The retrogression continues in the compact hatchback segment, where Maruti Suzuki only managed to sell 12,934 and 11,757 units of Swift and Wagon R respectively. The only car that has shown a positive YoY and that too with an astonishing 18780% growth is the Ford Figo. Though the 944 unit sales figure does not seem to impress on its own but when compared to its last year’s figure, it makes a difference. Like the Nano and the Eon, the Fiat Punto and the Honda Brio also made zero sales in September.

September'19 Premium Hatchback Top Selling Cars

Meanwhile, the premium hatchback segment too is going down the same path with an overall decline of -25%. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20 gathered 11,420 and 10,141 unit sales respectively. The Ford Freestyle suffered the steepest decline with -82% on its report card. On the brighter side, the Volkswagen Polo somehow managed to make a 4% growth with 1643 unit sales.
