Suzuki India is developing a new 250cc single-cylinder engine in collaboration with engineers at its Japanese headquarters that will produce around 25-28 PS of power on the Gixxer 250.

Suzuki’s grand comeback with the Gixxer 155 made sure its fans and compatriots sat up and took notice of the automaker’s newest product. In the crowded premium end of the 150cc segment, the Gixxer has been quick to carve a niche for itself and is also currently our pick from the lot, given the impressive amount of performance, styling and riding abilities on offer. With the Gixxer platform having proved itself, Suzuki seems to be now ready to take the next big step and is reportedly working on a new Gixxer 250 motorcycle for the Indian two-wheeler market.

While there isn’t a confirmation from the company as yet, an online report suggests that Suzuki India is working on a new 250cc motorcycle for the domestic market that could be christened as the ‘Gixxer 250’. The upcoming bike will draw power from a newly developed 250cc single-cylinder engine that is expected to make around 25-28 PS of power and will be mated to a 6-speed gearbox. In terms of styling, the upcoming bike will retain the profile from the current Gixxer, only getting bulkier than its 155cc counterpart with a more masculine fuel tank, wider handlebar and fatter tyres.

The riding position though will be retained from the current Suzuki Gixxer with an upright stance that is comfortable. While telescopic forks and a monoshock suspension are a given, braking performance will be upgraded with disc brakes at the rear. It needs to be seen though if Suzuki opts to include ABS on the bike, at least as an option. Earlier this year, the automaker had stated that it will be concentrating on the Gixxer and SF 155cc models for now and is not looking at the higher-capacity segment. However, with the Gixxer 250 under development, it won’t be very long till the company starts competing in the big league.

Currently in its development stage, Suzuki is most likely to showcase the Gixxer 250 as a concept at the 2016 Auto Expo next February while the launch can be expected in the second half of 2016. Apart from India, the automaker will also export the models overseas to several South East Asian markets. While the very capable Inazuma twin-cylinder bike couldn’t make it big because of its high pricing and lack of a sporty grunt, the Gixxer 250 sounds as a more India-ready model with beefed up lines, powerful engine and appreciable styling.

Given the fact that Suzuki is opting for a single-cylinder motor, prices are mostly expected in the Rs. 1.5 lakh range (ex-showroom) and will rival the KTM Duke 200, Mahindra Mojo and the likes. A full faired Gixxer 250 SF will also be launched later.
