Tata Altroz CNG AMT

Tata Motors has expanded the lineup of the Tata Altroz by introducing an AMT option for its CNG variants, with prices starting at Rs. 8.70 lakhs (ex-showroom). The move adds greater convenience to the CNG range and marks a notable update in the premium hatchback segment.

With this addition, the Altroz becomes the only car in its category in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG kit paired with an automatic transmission. The CNG-AMT combination is available across five variants, ranging from Pure to Accomplished S, with prices going up to Rs. 10.77 lakhs.

Under the hood, the Altroz CNG continues with the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine used in the petrol version, now paired with a twin-cylinder CNG setup. In CNG mode, the engine produces 73.5 HP and 103 Nm, while switching to petrol mode increases output to 88 HP and 115 Nm. The 5-speed AMT gearbox is shared with the standard petrol variants.

The introduction of the AMT option does not significantly alter the car’s core practicality, though the boot space remains reduced due to the CNG tanks. Compared to the 345-litre capacity offered by petrol and diesel versions, the CNG variant offers 210 litres of luggage space.

One of the distinguishing aspects of the Altroz CNG AMT is its availability across higher trims. Unlike some rivals that restrict CNG options to lower variants, Tata is offering this powertrain up to the Accomplished S trim. This variant includes features such as LED headlamps and tail-lamps, a sunroof, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, wireless charging, ambient lighting and 16-inch alloy wheels.

In comparison, competitors like the Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza currently offer CNG options primarily in lower-spec trims and without an automatic gearbox.

By introducing an AMT option in the CNG lineup, Tata Motors is addressing a gap in the market, particularly for buyers seeking a balance between lower running costs and the convenience of an automatic transmission in urban driving conditions.
