Tata Indica and Tata Indigo production stopped due to low sales and cut-throat competition.
Tata Motors has stopped the production of the Indica hatchback and the Indigo compact sedan mainly due to poor sales and stiff competition in the segment. According to data released by SIAM, the homegrown automaker sold 2583 units of the Indica and 1756 units of the Indigo in the entire 2017-18 fiscal. Nonetheless, there was no production and sales of both the cars in April 2018.
Launched back in 1998, the Indica was the frontrunner of Tata’s passenger vehicles line-up. Four years later came the Indigo which too was well received by the Indian market. The hatchback and the compact sedan were more popular with the taxi fleet operators. The homegrown automaker will, however, continue to provide the necessary support service. The Indica and the Indigo started to lose their sheen in the country post the launch of the Bolt hatchback and the Zest compact sedan followed by the Tiago and Tigor.
The Indica project was close to the then Chairman Ratan Tata’s scheme of things where he revealed that the car will have the dimensions of a Maruti Zen, cabin size of an Ambassador and fuel efficiency of a Maruti 800. The car, indeed, possessed all these qualities and managed to garner over 1,00,000 bookings when it was launched. Both the Indica and Indigo were powered by a 1.4-litre diesel motor producing 70 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque.
