Tata Motors sold 23,894 units in December, a decline of 44% compared to the corresponding month last year. Tata Motors’ total sales (including exports) for December 2008, stood at 25,219 vehicles, which is down by 47%. The cumulative sales for the company at 3.63 lakh units fell by 11%. Shares of Tata Motors ended 2.5% up at Rs 175.35 on the BSE.

The company, which is India’s largest commercial vehicle maker, saw sales of commercial vehicles (domestic) fall by 51% to 14,056 units in December 2008. While medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales took the biggest knock at 4,811 units, down by 69%, sales of light commercial vehicles at 9,245 units was down by 29%. Cumulative commercial vehicle sales for the fiscal year were 1.95 lakh units, a decline of 9%.

Tata Motors’ passenger vehicles, which include cars and utility vehicles, saw December sales at 9,838 units, a decline of 31%. Sales of the Indica at 6,749 units, declined by 29%, while the Indigo with sales of 1,673 units, reported a 21% growth over December 2007. The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 1,416 units, a fall of 59%. With higher retails than offtakes this month, the system inventory has been brought to manageable levels for the last quarter, the company said in a statement.
