Toyota is gearing up to launch the Vios sedan in India by mid-2018. The company is working hard to localise the car so as to price it competitively. Slotted in the mid-size sedan segment, the Vios will rival the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna.

Apart from the Fortuner, Innova and Corolla, the Japanese automaker hasn’t tasted real success with its other cars. Well, the Toyota Vios might just change that. On first impressions, the car does come across as a worthy contender in the mid-size sedan segment. The front fascia, though, has a grille borrowed from the Etios, thanks to the sporty anvil-shaped large black intake and the vertically stacked LED DRLs, the car looks distinctive.

The sedan measures 4420 mm in length and is wider than the Etios at 1700 mm. What this translates into is more cabin space and boot space. Getting the Vios’ interior up to the mark of a mid-size sedan will be the biggest challenge for Toyota. While the Vios’ cabin has a contemporary dashboard, new steering wheel and instrument cluster, the hard quality plastics, the touchscreen infotainment and the climate control will have to be updated. Talking of comfort in the cabin, seats look supportive and there is enough leg room.

Initially, the Toyota Vios will be available only with a 1.5-litre dual VVT-i petrol engine that churns out 108 HP of power and 140 Nm of torque. Automatic gearbox variants are the preferred ones in the segment hence the company will offer an automatic CVT gearbox variant which features a manual mode as well, with seven steps pre-selected.

Details on the diesel version of the sedan aren’t available yet but expect the Innova-maker to plonk the 1.4-litre diesel motor that powers the Corolla as well. The oil-burner produces 88 HP of power and 205 Nm of torque. A TRD Sportivo variant of the Vios could also be launched later to spice things up as Maruti Suzuki already sells the Ciaz RS.
