As of on July 1st 2012, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) launched what can be called as a uniform code for the recalling of vehicles that are found to have manufacturing defects, for the convenience of the customers concerned. The Voluntary Code on Vehicle Recall, as it is called, is applicable on registered passenger cars, two wheelers and commercial vehicles.

Under this code, a vehicle that is found to have a defect will be covered under the safety recall regulations for 7 years. Aimed at addressing potential issues that might exist in a motor vehicle, the code hopes to act as a trouble-shooter. All recall information will be posted on the concerned automotive company’s website, for the convenience of the customers and also communication will be received by the vehicle owners. The problem, whatsoever be it, shall be rectified by the company free of cost.

A statement released by SIAM has stated however that, recall depends entirely on the gravity and severity of occurrence of any possible hazard. On the violation of this code, the manufacturer shall be issued appropriate directions by the Government of India.
