India Yamaha Motor is developing a maxi scooter which is expected to be launched early next year. The Japanese firm believes there is a big market for such scooters in India and has been closely watching the segment.

Its rivals Suzuki (with the Burgman Street 125) and Aprilia (with the SXR 125 and 160) have already fielded their products which have been accepted well by customers.

Now, Yamaha has decided to enter the maxi scooter segment with a product of its own that is most likely to be based on its 125cc platform which encompasses the Fascino and Ray scooter models.

The Fascino will likely share its mechanical bits with the new maxi scooter

This would mean that the new maxi scooter will come with the Smart Motor Generator (SMG) to assist the petrol engine. Power and torque figures of the engine should also be the same as the Fascino that has 8.2 PS and 10.3 Nm.

To be pitted squarely against the Suzuki Burgman Street 125, the maxi scooter should be offered with Bluetooth connectivity, at least as an option, and is likely to be the most expensive scooter in the India Yamaha lineup.
