With updates to the Indigo Manza and Safari, Tata Motors hasn’t forgotten the Aria. The Tata Aria is the flagship vehicle from Tata Motors but sales never took off. The Aria was first launched in 4×4 guise but later the 4×2 version was launched, with more appealing prices. Even that wasn’t enough to put the sales chart on fire for the Tata Aria, which sold just 25 units last month. Now Tata Motors has slipped in a new variant of the Aria 4×2, called the Pure LX variant.

The Tata Aria 4×2 Pure LX variant is priced at Rs. 9.95 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is by far the lowest price of the Aria till date. This is not the first time the Aria’s price has dipped below the Rs. 10 lakh price point. Last year Tata dealers were offering close to Rs. 2 lakh discount on the crossover and soon Tata Motors officially announced an anniversary offer, where the Aria’s entry level model was priced at Rs. 9.99 lakhs for a limited period.

However since the anniversary pricing, input costs and excise duties have increased drastically but the poor demand has led to Tata Motors trying another attempt at infusing life into the Aria. The base Pure LX variant gets a single mass fly wheel and losses out on features such as ABS, EBD, audio system, fabric seats (uses vinyl), follow me home headlamps, body coloured rub-strips, chrome interior door handles, chrome bordered lower air dam and roof storage compartments over the Pure variant. Thus the entry level variant of the Aria is a completely stripped down version which is targeted towards fleet operators but retains all-wheel disc brakes, body colored bumpers, projectors headlights, rear AC vents and keyless entry.

The Tata Aria is powered by a 2.2-litre DICOR diesel engine which produces 140 PS and 320 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a version with automatic transmission is on the cards. Tata Motors is already working on a facelift for the Aria, which will address the biggest reason for its non acceptance in the Indian market, its styling. The Pure LX variant won’t really change things much and the Aria will continue to sell in double digit numbers, till the facelift arrives sometime in the next 18 months.
