The 2018 Tiger 800 gets over 200 updates, mechanically and cosmetically

The 2018 Triumph Tiger 800 has been launched in India with prices starting from Rs. 11.76 lakhs (ex-showroom). The adventure tourer is available in three variants – XR, XRx and XCx where the XR variants are road-focused (with alloy wheels) while the sole XC variant is off-road oriented (with spoke wheels and dual-purpose tyres). Triumph says the Tiger 1200 will be launched in the coming months.

For starters, the 2018 Tiger 800 gets cosmetic as well mechanical changes. The biggest, of course, is an improved 800cc in-line 3-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 12-valve engine which produces 95 PS at 9500 RPM and 78.80 Nm of torque at 8050 RPM. The powerplant comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The motor gets a shorter first gear which enhances the off-road capabilities by ensuring low-speed response and acceleration. There is also a new exhaust system which is lighter and smaller than the outgoing model.

On the styling front, the new Tiger 800 looks meaner and mature thanks to the new LED DRL headlamps. The 2018 iteration gets new colour schemes and body graphics. The windscreen now gets 5-step adjustability and also features what Triumph calls Aero Deflectors. There is a full-colour TFT instrument cluster (as seen in the Street Triple RS) on the mid and top-spec variants while the base trim gets an LCD meter. Heated handlebars are standard across the range except for the base XR trim. In addition to the 5 riding modes (Rain, Road, Off-Road, Sport and Rider modes), the off-road spec XC also gets an Off-Road Pro mode.

The XR range uses fully adjustable Showa USD forks at the front and an adjustable monoshock at the rear. The XC range, on the other hand, gets WP suspension setup. The chassis and swingarm are same as in the previous Tiger and the 2018 Tiger gets brakes from Brembo (the base XR gets Nissin brake calipers). The 2018 Tiger 800 range is offered in a choice of four new colours – Jet Black, Crystal White, Lucerne Blue and Matte Jet Black.
