Traditional Volvo design elements like the signature front grille and the Thor hammer headlights make their way into the S60

Volvo has taken the wraps off the 2019 Volvo S60 sedan at its new plant in Charleston, South Carolina in the United States which will be the vehicle’s global production site. The new S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel engine. Expect the mid-size sedan to be launched in India sometime in 2019.

In terms of looks and design, the new S60 is a typical Volvo car to start with. The signature grille and the Thor hammer headlamps adorn the front fascia. The side profile gets strong character lines and not to forget the new design alloy wheels. The LED tail-lights are more elongated now and take the shape of a C. Overall, the S60 vastly mimics the design of its larger sibling, the S90. Underpinned by the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, the 2019 Volvo S60 measures 4761 mm in length, 2040 mm in width and 1431 mm in height. The sedan gets a wheelbase of 2872 mm.

Coming to the interior, the cabin is again standard Volvo fare and is very much identical to the XC60. The design of the dashboard, tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system, 3-spoke steering wheel and the all-digital instrument cluster are largely similar to the XC60 SUV. The S60 gets features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, climate control AC, panoramic sunroof, reverse parking camera and leather upholstery.

The 2019 Volvo S60 will be offered in two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines which include 2.0-litre T8 Twin Engine which produces a combined 390 HP of power with the 303 HP petrol engine sending power to the front wheels and the 65 kW electric unit powering the rear axle. This model offers 640 Nm of torque and can do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is rated at 250 km/hr.

The T8 Twin Engine option will also be offered in a ‘Polestar Engineered’ variant, developed by Volvo’s new performance sub-brand. The upgrade includes revamped wheels, brakes, suspension and a tweaked engine ECU which boosts combined power output to 415 HP. The Polestar Engineered S60 produces 670 Nm of torque and is 0.2 seconds faster to the ton than the standard version. The entry-level S60 comes powered by a 250 HP 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the T5 trim while there will also be a T6 variant with a supercharged unit with a power output of 310 HP. An 8-speed automatic transmission is offered as standard across all engine options.
