UM International confirms that bikes ranging from 300-700cc will be made in India.

UM International is bullish about India as the country is becoming a hub for premium bikes

US-based motorcycle manufacturer, UM International LLC is planning to make India a manufacturing hub for motorcycles under 700cc. “We will make India a hub for developing and manufacturing vehicles which are more than 300cc and less than 700cc,” said Jose Villegas, director, UM India.

Currently, the company has platforms to manufacture up to 300cc motorcycles in India. The company is working on different engines and platforms for higher capacity motorcycles. UM India, currently has the Renegade Commando, Sports S, Commando Mojave and Commando Classic in its India line-up.

All the above motorcycles come powered by a 280cc, single-cylinder motor that produces 25.15 HP of power and 23 Nm of torque. This liquid-cooled motor comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

The company is planning to set up a new manufacturing facility and a new R&D unit in Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu. The planned new facility will have an annual production capacity of 1,20,000-1,50,000 units and will see an investment of around Rs. 100 crores.

Currently, UM India has a manufacturing plant in Uttarakhand and is expecting to achieve sales volumes of 25,000-28,000 units in FY 2017-18. The Classic models are expected to contribute to around 30 percent to that number. The company has sold around 10,000 units since its inception in the last 10 months.
