After the Wagon R electric, Maruti will launch an electric version of the Ertiga in India.

2019 Maruti Ertiga Review Test Drive
The Ertiga electric might differ in length compared to the current model

It is a known fact that Maruti Suzuki will launch the Wagon R electric in India in the near future. The company’s second electric car for India is likely to be based on the Ertiga. The Maruti Ertiga was first launched in 2012 and it got a generation change very recently.

The electric version of the Maruti Ertiga could differ in length than the petrol/diesel variants and it is likely to get a new name too. There is a possibility of the India-made EV being exported to and sold in other markets. Suzuki engineers had shortlisted the Ertiga and Ciaz for developing electric versions but the Ertiga was finalised because in a sedan a lot of major changes would have to be done to install an electric motor.

Suzuki is heading the development of affordable EVs for India but there is a possibility that Toyota will sell the vehicles too. Suzuki has partnered with Toyota to develop hybrid-electric vehicles for India and other markets. The automaker, along with Toshiba and Denso have invested in a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in India too.

Maruti’s first EV for India will be the Wagon R EV which is currently undergoing testing and will be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. Both the Wagon R and Ertiga are very popular with private customers as well as fleet operators and hence it seems to be a wise decision to develop electric versions of these vehicles.
