Royal Enfield removes gear indicators from 350cc models due to supply issues
Royal Enfield has temporarily removed the gear position indicator from its 350cc J Series motorcycles, including popular models such as the Meteor 350, Classic 350 and Hunter 350. The decision comes as a result of global supply challenges linked to rare-earth materials used in motor sensors, components that play a role in the gear indication systems of modern motorcycles.
While rare-earth shortages have most visibly affected electric and hybrid vehicles, their impact extends to conventional motorcycles as well. Royal Enfield has taken this step as a temporary workaround to maintain production and deliveries amid these constraints.
According to a circular sent to dealers, the company plans to retrofit the gear position indicator once the necessary components become available. For now, affected bikes will only feature a neutral indicator in place of the full gear display.
Royal Enfield has clarified that this measure currently applies only to its 350cc range, with other models in its lineup remaining unaffected. The brand emphasised that customer satisfaction remains a priority and that retrofitting will be carried out as soon as supplies stabilise.
The rare-earth material supply situation has shown gradual improvement in recent months, suggesting that normal production could resume soon. For now, buyers of new Royal Enfield 350cc motorcycles may need to manage without a gear position indicator until the retrofit program begins.
