The GEM-B compact SUV will be rivalling the Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta in the segment and is expected to go on sale by 2018.

Earlier this year, General Motors announced an investment of a whopping $1 billion in India while also launching the TrailBlazer SUV more recently, its first of the 10 all-new products set to arrive in the country as part of a turnaround strategy. With SUVs being the rage at present, a recent report suggests that GM is now looking to capitalise on the market sentiment by adding a compact SUV in its stable. This upcoming compact SUV has been codenamed ‘GEM-B SUV’.

The Chevrolet GEM-B SUV will be based on a completely new platform that will also spawn a compact sedan and probably a premium hatchback in the future. The compact SUV will be close to rivals Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta, Suzuki S-Cross and the likes in the segment. Hence, dimensions can be expected to cross the 4-metre length. A sub 4-metre version cannot be ruled out either given the tax benefits. Incidentally, GM decided not to opt for the Chevrolet Trax sold overseas that fits rather well in the compact SUV profile.

While it is too early to comment on the powertrain, possibilities are that GM could introduce its family Ecotec turbocharged engines on the GEM-B SUV that were introduced internationally last year. Compatriot Ford also offers its 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged motor on the EcoSport in India while Maruti will introduce the BoosterJet on the Baleno in the future which is being locally manufactured. Styling cues could come from the Adra concept that was completely developed by Indian designers at the GM Technical Centre in Bangalore. The concept showcased several attributes like high ground clearance, enhanced visibility, brawny looks and a boxy profile, all of which have been increasingly appreciated by the masses in the segment.

The Chevrolet GEM-B compact SUV is expected to go on sale in 2018 and could be revealed at the 2018 Auto Expo. A lot would’ve changed by that time, with almost the entire segment revamped by then. 2018 will see the next generation Renault Duster arrive in the market, while the Maruti S-Cross and Hyundai Creta will have received comprehensive facelifts. As a result, the pressure will surely be lingering upon GM to get its iteration right on the first attempt. Meanwhile, the automaker is working towards rebuilding its lost brand image in the country.
