Maruti’s cars dominate the segment as is the usual case

In February 2022, hatchback sales remained a mixed bag

The Renault Kwid is slowly diminishing from buyer’s minds

Maruti’s Alto continues to be the leader of hatchback sales for February 2022 with 11,551 unit sales, but, its stablemate, the S-Presso (8140 units) was closer than expected.

Renault retailed 1924 units of the Kwid this past month and during the same period, 239 people drove home a new unit of the Datsun redi-GO. In all, the small cars registered total sales of 21,854 which is a 24 percent reduction in sales year-on-year (YoY).

No units of the Datsun GO were retailed last month

Unlike months prior, in February 2022, hatchback sales chart was led by the Maruti Swift (19,202 units), while the Wagon R came second with 14,669 unit sales.

The Maruti Celerio came third by registering sales of 9896 units, while the Tata Punch was a close fourth with 9592 units against its name. The Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS (8552 units) was not far off either.

As Tata retailed 4489 units of its Tiago this past month, Maruti found just over 4000 new takers for the Ignis and Hyundai sold 2393 units of its new generation Santro.

In total, the hatchbacks in the above list registered sales of 72,814 units in February, as opposed to 67,735 units during a same period last year, resulting in a 7 percent YoY sales growth.

Toyota did not retail any unit of the Glanza last month

And, finally, premium hatchback sales in February 2022 was led by the Maruti Baleno, as 12,570 individuals took home one unit of the car each during the period in question.

While Hyundai sold 5830 units of the i20, Tata’s Altroz was not far away with 5011 unit sales. The Volkswagen Polo (1233 units) and Honda Jazz (457 units) completed the list.

Overall, the cars in the segment registered sales of 25,101 units, a 35 percent reduction in YoY sales. But, bear in mind that Toyota did not sell any unit of the Glanza last month.
