Mahindra has just launched the Gusto scooter in India. We compare it with its closest rivals, i.e. the Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter to see how it fares when it comes to specifications.

Mahindra Gusto Launch India
The Mahindra Gusto is the newest entrant to the two-wheeler market

Looks – Now we don’t really need to describe the Honda Activa’s looks. The scooter is too common on our roads and it seems everyone from youngsters to senior citizens are happy with its design. The design is fairly non-cluttered and there is really nothing to hate about it. The Mahindra Gusto on the other hand carries a lot of design elements that may appeal to some and may not to others. The V-shaped headlight looks good but we feel Mahindra could have skipped those silver ‘wings’ on the front panel. The TVS Jupiter is an attractive looking scooter with a design that serves its purpose very well.

Engines and Mileage – All three scooters come with engines of similar cubic capacities, i.e. 109-odd cc. The Activa and Gusto produce identical power while the Jupiter churns out marginally lower power as compared to rivals. In terms of torque, the Activa produces the highest torque followed by the Gusto. The Activa gives a claimed fuel efficiency of 60 km/l while the Gusto and Jupiter give out 63 km/l and 62 km/l respectively.

Size – While the three scooters may seem similar in size, the Activa actually is the shortest in length while the Jupiter is the longest. The Gusto though has the maximum height whereas the Jupiter is the shortest. In width, the Activa is the widest followed by the Gusto. The Gusto is the heaviest out of the three while the Activa is the lightest. The Jupiter is only marginally heavier than the Activa. The Gusto and Jupiter have the exact same wheelbase while the Activa features a shorter wheelbase.

Pricing – The Mahindra Gusto is the cheapest product with the Rs. 44,000/- price for the DX variant while the Jupiter is marginally more expensive. The VX variant of the Gusto is priced at par with the Honda Activa. The Gusto VX comes with a lot of useful features and hence the pricing seems very good and the scooter provides a good value-for-money proposition.
