Hyundai Crater Concept previews tougher future XRT off-road design direction

Hyundai has revealed its new Crater Concept at AutoMobility LA 2025, showcasing a compact off-road SUV study that previews the next phase of the brand’s rugged XRT design direction. Developed at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California, the concept signals Hyundai’s intention to build more emotional and capability-focused styling into future adventure-oriented models.

A New Step in Hyundai’s XRT Design Evolution

The Crater Concept reflects Hyundai’s aim to strengthen the visual toughness of upcoming XRT vehicles. With its upright stance, sculpted bodywork and protective elements, the concept is designed to embody the spirit of exploration while aligning with the outdoor-driven lifestyle that has influenced Hyundai’s recent SUV lineup.

Exterior: Created for Off-Road Functionality

The concept features compact proportions with steep approach and departure angles for improved off-road usability. Its 18-inch hexagonal wheels paired with 33-inch tyres enhance grip and ground clearance.

Key exterior elements include:

  • Wide protective skid plate
  • Roof platform for added lighting and gear
  • Limb risers providing protection on narrow trails
  • Strong, wide fenders creating a planted stance
  • Layered parametric pixel lighting
  • Rocker panels signalling both protection and utility

Hyundai has also included creative touches like side-mirror cameras that work as removable flashlights and a recovery hook that doubles as a bottle opener.

The Crater Concept is finished in Dune Gold Matte, a California-inspired green-gold shade with orange accents on functional components.

Interior: Tech-Rich and Built for Adventure

The cabin is designed for users who value durability and flexibility. The Crater Concept uses rugged materials, structural details and modular elements to support off-road travel.

Interior highlights include:

  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) configurable digital experience
  • Full-width dynamic head-up display with integrated rearview feed
  • Bent-metal-style crash pad with ambient lighting
  • Exposed roll-cage structure with grab handles
  • Wraparound seats with enhanced bolsters and four-point restraints
  • Removable Bluetooth speaker console
  • Functional lighting cues and unique interior patterns

Materials include black leather, Alcantara, brushed metal accents and topographic patterns, creating a cabin built to withstand heavy use while ageing naturally with outdoor activity.

Off-Road Control Systems

The Crater Concept includes a tactile off-road controller for:

  • Front and rear differential locking
  • Traction and braking adjustment
  • Terrain modes: Snow, Sand and Mud
  • Downhill brake control
  • Trailer brake control
  • Built-in compass and altimeter

The concept will be showcased throughout the LA Auto Show alongside Hyundai’s latest vehicles, including the new 2026 Palisade, the IONIQ 5 and the IONIQ 6 N.
