Hyundai considers hybrid powertrain for Creta to expand portfolio options
Hyundai is reportedly considering introducing a hybrid powertrain option for Creta. The model, which is currently available with internal combustion engine and EV versions, could soon receive a hybrid avatar as the automaker looks to diversify its offerings in a growing segment.
Hybrid technology is gradually gaining traction in India’s mass-market passenger vehicle space. The number of hybrid vehicle sales has increased from 41,477 units in FY23 to 1,04,800 units in FY25, with market share also growing from 1.1% to 2.4% over the same period. Despite this growth, the hybrid segment remains limited in terms of model options, mostly represented by vehicles from Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Honda.
Introducing a hybrid version of the Hyundai Creta, one of the best-selling SUVs in the country with over 12.5 lakh units sold since its launch in 2015, could significantly boost the hybrid segment’s presence. Given its widespread popularity, the Creta hybrid could make hybrid powertrains more mainstream in India’s compact SUV space.
Tarun Garg, Whole-Time Director and COO at Hyundai Motor India, highlighted the company’s access to a broad range of technologies through the Hyundai Motor Group. These include plug-in hybrids, strong hybrids, battery electric vehicles and even hydrogen fuel cell options. While he didn’t confirm a timeline or technical details for a Creta hybrid, he suggested that hybrid power could be a better fit for Creta customers than options like CNG, which tend to compromise on performance.
Currently, the Creta’s ICE range includes three engine choices: a 1.5-litre MPi petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel, mated to various transmission options including manual, IVT, DCT and torque converter automatics. The EV version of the Creta features 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery packs, with a claimed range of up to 473 km.
Meanwhile, rival manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Mahindra and Kia are also exploring hybrid powertrains, suggesting a broader industry trend toward electrified alternatives.
Though no official confirmation has been made, the potential launch of a Hyundai Creta hybrid could provide Indian buyers with more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly choices in a segment that continues to dominate the market.
