Mahindra has confirmed that it is evaluating the launch of new electric 2-wheelers in India. The vehicles will be developed specifically for the Indian market and will be manufactured locally.

Mahindra was one of the first companies to launch electric vehicles in India but so far, have not launched any electric 2-wheeler in the country. In the USA, the brand has an electric scooter on sale, which is known as the GenZe 2.0. It offers a range of 56 kms and is priced at approximately Rs. 2.62 lakhs (ex-showroom). It is not available in the Indian market because of its very high price tag.

Mahindra is also developing new electric passenger vehicles and electric light commercial vehicles which will be launched in India in the next 3 years. The company has minimal presence in the petrol-powered 2-wheeler segment and its older generation 2-wheelers such as the Gusto, Mojo and Centuro are about to get phased out from the market due to poor consumer demand.

Once the brand launches new 2-wheelers in the Indian market, its chief rivals will be Bajaj Auto, TVS and Hero MotoCorp, in addition to more than a dozen start-ups which are readying their own electric scooters and bikes to be launched next year.

As per the data shared by Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), 1.26 lakh electric 2-wheelers were sold in 2018 in India whereas only 54,800 units were sold in 2017. This clearly indicates that the demand for electric vehicles is increasing swiftly.
