We are all aware that Mahindra is planning to launch the SsangYong Rexton (with a Mahindra badge) in India. Now, according to sources, the SUV will be making its debut at the 2018 Auto Expo and will be launched by the festive season this year. Toyota, Skoda and Ford watch out! The Rexton nameplate is likely to be retained by Mahindra.

The Mahindra Rexton is expected to remain largely identical to the one sold in the global markets and that said, Mahindra will not just replace the badges and sell the SUV. Instead, the automaker will bring the Rexton in line with its current design language, probably, by giving a new grille and differently designed alloy wheels (basically, making it look more like a Mahindra than a SsangYong).

Also unknown is what kind of equipment will the India-spec Rexton get. The vehicle on sale in international markets get projector headlights, 360-degree camera, powered tailgate, Nappa leather upholstery, cooled seats and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While all these features would be nice to have, Mahindra could skip on some to keep the costs in check.

The Mahindra Rexton draws power from a 2.2-litre diesel motor that produces 187 HP of power and 420 Nm of torque. The oil-burner unit will come paired with a 7-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Once launched, the car will sit at the top of Mahindra’s food-chain. The two-tonne SUV is likely to be priced at around Rs. 24 lakhs (ex-showroom), making it undercut the segment best-seller Toyota Fortuner by a full Rs. 4 lakhs.
