March 2020 has been disastrous for hatchbacks, all show negative YoY figures.
It is a tough time for the auto industry across the globe, not only in India due to the COVID-19 crisis. The figures of hatchback sales in March 2020 are quite shocking to look at. The sales have crashed last month and all the hatchbacks show substantial negative YoY growth.
The entry-level hatchback segment sales has the Maruti Alto on top doing 10,829 units with a negative YoY growth of 36 percent. Maruti S-Press takes the second spot with 5159 units while Kwid comes third doing 1475 units with massive 75 percent negative growth. The Datsun redi-GO manages only 139 units with 90 percent fall in sales.
The Maruti Wagon R leads the pack for the mid-size hatchback segment with 9151 units showing 43 percent fall in sales. The Swift comes in second with 8575 units and 40 percent fall in sales. Hyundai Grand i10 takes the third spot with 4293 units having 41 percent fall in sales.
The Tata Tiago gets the biggest dent in sales with 1127 units in March 2020 showing 84 percent YoY negative growth. Tata Bolt, Toyota Etios Liva and Fiat Punto show no sales this month as the cars have been discontinued.
The Maruti Baleno has topped the charts in premium hatchback sales as usual. It was also the top selling car in the country in March 2020. It managed 11,406 units last month but still 34 percent fall in YoY sales.
Hyundai Elite i20 takes the second position with quite a lower number of 3455 units last month having 72 percent fall in sales. Third place is taken by the Glanza with 1533 units. The Altroz scores 1147 units taking the fourth position.
The Ford Freestyle has seen a big fall in sales by 77 percent doing 340 units last month. The Volkswagen Polo does only 105 units with 92 percent negative growth while the Honda Jazz has no sales since it has been discontinued.
We’ll hardly see any dispatches from the carmakers this month since there is no production happening due to the nationwide lockdown.
