Maruti all set to reduce the number of platforms its cars are made on and shall conform to the new crash test standards coming by October 2017.

Maruti Vitara Brezza Review
The Vitara Brezza is one of the cars that comes with the TECT body

Maruti Suzuki has decided to limit the number of platforms for its cars which will be complying with the new safety and crash test standards. The car maker currently sells 16 different vehicles on about 8 different platforms. Maruti also intends to bring in TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) into the consolidated platforms. As a result, the company will not just be making its cars more safer, but will also be reducing costs and will be earning higher returns as a result of standardisation of parts.

Vehicles with TECT are safer, stronger, more rigid while also being lighter. Currently there are 3 cars that have the TECT body, the Ignis, Baleno, and Vitara Brezza and Maruti has invested huge monies to bring in these 3 models in the past 2 years. On the other hand, the S-Cross, Ertiga, and the Ciaz have been certified by homologation agencies for advanced safety regulations.

With the advanced crash and safety norms kicking in from October 2017, Maruti says the Vitara Brezza has already been tested to meet the frontal, side and offset impact regulations while the Ignis and the Baleno are equipped to meet the frontal, offset, side and pedestrian safety norms. On the whole, Maruti is desirous to make 75-80% of their cars compliant with the safety norms before them becoming mandatory.
