May 2022 SUV Sales – MG Astor achieves breakthrough sales, displaces 7 cars for the 7th spot

May, 2022, has turned out be an action packed month when it comes to SUV sales with many cars fighting tough for the top spots.

These C and above segment SUVs are most sought after cars by buyers in India and it’s evident from the impressive growth each model has achieved.

As usual, Hyundai Creta took the first place selling more than 10k units. It was the only SUV to have crossed 10k unit sales. It was distantly followed by Kia Seltos which recorded over 6000 units. However, both the cars have lost over 2000 units when compared to April.

Within a short period of time, Mahindra XUV700 has made great inroads into this segment and now the flagship Mahindra has sold more than 5000 units.

With over 78,000 customers waiting in line for the SUV, the numbers are expected to increase further in the coming months.

Mahinda Scorpio, after a temporary hiccup, is back again at the top registering excellent sales. It has clinched the fourth place with 144 percent growth. At number 5 and 6, Tata Harrier and Safari are consistently registering good sales.

The biggest development this time is the performance of the MG Astor. Out of nowhere, the SUV, which is known for its various ADAS features, has displaced as many as 7 SUVs clinching the seventh spot from 14th last time.

For reference, last month, it has sold a meagre 249 units against May month’s impressive 2022 units.

At number 8, 9, and 10, Hyundai Alcazar, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Hector nearly maintained their sales without any breakthrough developments. Unfortunately, Maruti Suzuki’s S-Cross has suffered big loss MoM. It has lost nearly 1500 units when compared to April.

Finally, Volkswagen Taigun, Jeep Compass, MG ZS EV, and Nissan Kicks took the last places. The Kicks, after continuous dismissal performance, has achieved some sales this time.

Coming to the entry-level luxury SUV segment, as usual, Toyota Fortuner lead the pack by a massive margin. Although sales are heavily down from April, the SUV did manage a YoY growth of 7793 percent.

Skoda Kodiaq distantly followed the Fortuner and took the second place with 106 units. Surprisingly, Mahindra Alturas G4 is back again on the top selling 90 units and clinching the third spot.
