Maruti Suzuki will be launching a new entry-level car in 2020. The car is currently code-named the Maruti Y1K and is under development at automaker’s Rohtak factory.

Reports suggest that the car is most likely to be placed in between the Alto and the WagonR. One more interesting thing that has come up is the fact that Maruti is expected to revive the Zen model name with this car.

It is said that the Maruti Y1K will set new benchmarks in its segment. The size will be more than the currently available cars and keeping in mind that it is based on the Future S, it can even be a crossover. The car will have more space on the inside and it will be bigger overall.

2020 will see the strictest ever, BS6 emission norms come into effect and passenger safety features will be mandatory. Safety systems like ABS and airbags will come as standard in all the cars leading to an increased cost of production. The prices of the Maruti Y1K are thus expected to be higher than the current models in this segment.

The Maruti Y1K will most probably use an 800cc or 1000cc engine. An AMT option, apart from a regular 5-speed manual transmission, could be offered as well.

The new small car will compete with vehicles like the Hyundai Eon and Renault Kwid. The Kwid has been on sale since a couple of years now and is soon going to get a facelift too.
