The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been a super hit ever since it was launched almost two decades ago. The Wagon R has been the backbone of Maruti in terms of sales. Now it’s time for the next generation, Maruti Suzuki will introduce the new Wagon R in the first half of 2019.

Maruti Suzuki has already started testing the new-gen Wagon R on Indian roads. Expect the new model to maintain the same tall body structure as the Wagon R has been seen for many years. Being absolutely spacious on legroom and headroom along with generous luggage space for a hatchback.

This car will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional automatic transmission. The hood of this car might be a little longer than the current model to host a bigger engine. Maruti will also be working on a fully electric version of the Wagon R which will be launched in 2020.

In Japan, Suzuki’s latest generation Wagon R is already on sale but the Indian version will be different in terms of design. This car will not be based on Suzuki’s new Heartect platform to ensure lower costs. Hyundai will be launching the new Santro later this month with a long list of equipment, Maruti has to launch Wagon R with even more features to win the tallboy race.

India’s largest car maker is aiming to sell 18,000 units of the new Wagon R every month, which will perhaps make the new model one of the company’s best sellers. The next generation Wagon R will have to compete against the Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago and Maruti’s very own Celerio and Ignis.
