The Global NCAP conducted few crash tests on more than 25 cars

The Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) tested numerous cars from the Indian market which includes some SUVs, compact sedans and hatchbacks. Global NCAP is conducting crash tests since 2014 and more than 25 cars from the Indian market have been tested till now. The recently tested Maruti Vitara Brezza scored 4-stars while the Renault Lodgy MPV scored 0-star in the Global NCAP test. All these tests were conducted at a speed of 64 km/hr.

The list of safest cars in the Indian market starts with the Tata Nexon and Volkswagen Polo by scoring the highest 4-stars for adult occupancy and 3-stars for child occupancy. The Nexon gets two frontal airbags along with ABS and ISOFIX child seat mounts, while the Polo gets two airbags and ABS as standard. The list is then followed by the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Toyota Etios and Tata Zest scoring a good 4-stars for adult occupancy and 2-stars for child occupancy, these cars were equipped with dual front airbags.

The Global NCAP rated the Renault Duster, Ford Aspire and Hyundai i20 as moderately safe cars, both the cars get 3-stars for adult occupancy and 2-stars for child occupancy. The Renault Kwid scored 1-star for both adult and child occupancy. The Kwid on which the test was conducted gets an optional driver-side airbag while the without airbag variant of the Kwid scored zero star.

The vehicles which were rated as weak in safety – the Ford Figo, Maruti Eeco, Hyundai Eon, Maruti Alto and Datsun redi-Go scored zero star for adult occupancy and 2-stars for child occupancy. These cars come without airbags and other safety features. The bigger vehicles like the Mahindra Scorpio, Renault Lodgy and Chevrolet Enjoy scored the same.

Global NCAP rated some cars as unsafe which come without airbags such as the Maruti Celerio, Maruti Swift, Hyundai i10 and Tata Zest. These cars score zero star for adult occupant and one star for child occupant safety, as the body-shell was rated unstable.
