Tata Nexon Review Test Drive
The Nexon EV will be quite expensive when compared to its fuel versions

Tata Motors on its 74th Annual General Meeting has confirmed that it is gearing up to launch 4 electric vehicles in India over the next 18 months. The new less-polluting lineup will include all-electric alternatives of its upcoming hatchback Altroz, Nexon compact SUV, new and improved Tigor EV, and a 4th yet to be announced vehicle.

Since that’s all that is confirmed by the company, the rest is open for speculation. The Nexon EV is expected to get a lithium-ion battery pack placed under the seat instead of the conventional fuel tank, just like the Tigor EV. AC and DC fast charge options could be on offer as well. The compact SUV could share battery tech and motor with the Altroz EV displayed publicly at the 2018 Geneva motor show. Tata vocalised its ambition to offer a 250-300 kms range on full charge and 80% charge in 60 mins with DC fast charging on the Altroz EV.

Tata’s 4 new electric vehicle offerings will create quite a commotion in the industry but it will all come down to the asking price. While the Nexon EV’s starting price is likely to be at least double of its standard sibling, the Altroz EV is most likely to be priced around Rs. 10 lakhs.

In the backdrop, Tata Motors is also revamping its current electric vehicle offering, the Tigor EV. The present model utilises a 16.2 kWh battery pack and offers an ARAI-tested range of 140 kms. A new, larger battery pack will boost the range to over 200 kms. The Tigor EV starts at Rs. 9.99 lakhs available to commercial buyers only. Meanwhile, a bunch of those were allocated to government officials who complained it to be underpowered and offer less range. Let’s hope the update rectifies that!
