Tata Tigor XM iCNG

These will be the first cars with CNG automatic combination in India

Tata Motors has recently teased the much-needed CNG automatic variants for the Tiago and Tigor. This will be the first time that we will witness a CNG automatic combination in the Indian market, which is a potential game-changer for the CNG segment in the country, setting a new trend in the market.

The new automatic variants are likely to be based on the top-end XT and XZ+ trims. Tata Motors will most likely introduce the automated manual transmission (AMT) with these variants.

Under the hood, both the Tata Tiago CNG automatic and Tigor CNG automatic are likely to retain the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine found in their manual counterparts. This engine configuration makes 73.4 PS at 6000 RPM and 95 Nm of torque at 3500 RPM in the CNG mode. In petrol mode it offers 86 PS and 113 Nm of torque.

We can expect the same twin-cylinder technology with these CNG variants that take less space in the boot and offer more luggage capacity. However, the fuel efficiency of the automatic CNG variants might drop marginally compared to the manual variants.

The decision to offer automatic transmission in CNG variants is a strategic move by Tata Motors to cater to a wider audience, including those seeking a hassle-free driving experience in city traffic. The inclusion of this feature in the Tiago and Tigor CNG models could potentially set a new benchmark for the industry, prompting other manufacturers to explore similar options.

In the near future we can also expect other cars in their lineup like Tata Punch and Tata Altroz CNG to get AMT option as well.
