December 2020 Compact SUV Sales
An array of offerings is better for customers, eh!

In the December 2020 compact SUV sales list, there is little to differentiate between the cars occupying first and second positions.

Hyundai’s Venue with 12,313 unit sales, defeated the Vitara Brezza from Maruti (12,251) in the race to grab the top spot.

However, while the South Korean product registered a solid 29 percent year-over-year (YoY) growth, the Maruti car’s sales declined by 10 percent.

The Nexon might be Tata’s best-selling car in December 2020, but it came a distant third, with the firm having retailed 6835 units of the model.

Then comes the Kia Sonet, which, from being the leader of the segment in November 2020, fell to fourth place, with 5959 units to its name.

Mahindra sold 3974 units of its XUV300, while 2670 examples of its Thar off-roader reached customers this past month. The carmaker needs to ramp up production to capitalise on the demand the Thar currently enjoys.

Next up is the Vitara Brezza once again, under Toyota’s Urban Cruiser moniker. In all, 1762 unit of the compact SUV was retailed last month, followed by the Ford EcoSport (934 units).

Honda’s WR-V was within sniffing distance of the American car with 930 units in the December 2020 compact SUV sales, while the segment’s newest entrant, the Nissan Magnite, saw 560 units of itself reach customers.

With the number of bookings the compact SUV has received so far, Nissan has started a third shift in its plant to reduce the waiting period. So, sales will only increase in the coming months.

In all, the Thar, XUV300 and Nexon enjoyed a strong YoY growth and so did the segment as a whole, with 47 percent growth and 48,188 units sold.
