ASEAN NCAP has extended the new 2020 Toyota Hilux’s safety results to the Toyota Fortuner, which has resulted in the SUV receiving a 5-star safety rating.

Results of the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP) categories have been extended to the SUV by the testing agency.

This has been done because the SUV has comparable occupant protection to the tested pickup truck with identical design and similar restraint system for crashworthiness based on technical evidences provided by Toyota.

The tested variant’s origin, ASEAN NCAP says, was Thailand and it had a 2.8-litre diesel engine, 3 airbags and a kerb weight of 2080 kg.

But, as standard, the car sold in Thailand comes with two side and curtain airbags in addition, along with ABS, ESC, seatbelt reminder for front passengers, emergency braking, lane departure warning, forward collision warning and lane keep assist.

Overall, the car scored 87.46, which makes it a 5-star car and the points awarded for AOP, COP and Safety Assist was 47.27, 22.13 and 18.06, respectively.

Data showed that the vehicle provided good protection to both adult occupants at the front during the frontal crash test. But, the lower part of the driver’s legs showed risk of injury.

This is not the first time that the results have been extended this way as even in 2016 the Toyota Fortuner ASEAN NCAP rating was extended from the Hilux’s results.

Nonetheless, it is a testament to car’s build and carmakers’ commitment to producing safe cars.
