Toyota will be voluntarily recalling close to 1.43 million units of its Prius hybrid worldwide, out of which 170 units in India will be recalled. For this, Toyota has started a campaign in India on 29th June. The problem lies with the curtain shield airbag inflators of the car. Toyota will inspect and install retention brackets for the same. The repairs and installation will be done free of cost.

According to Toyota, the welded twin inflators can develop cracks, which widens over time, causing the airbag inflator chambers to separate. This would cause the curtain side airbag to only partially inflate and in rare cases could also cause the inflators to enter the cabin, which would prove hazardous to occupants. This recall has nothing to do with the recent Takata airbag recall.

The recall has been announced for all Prius hybrids manufactured between the month of November 2009 and April 2016. While there have been no reported failures, Toyota is taking the recall as a precautionary step in order to prevent any possible mishap. Additionally, the car maker has also initiated a recall for about 2.87 million vehicles worldwide, to fix faulty fuel emissions controls.

The vehicles recalled are the Toyota Prius hybrid, the Prius plug-in and the Lexus CT200H produced between the month of October 2008 and April 2012. 7.43 lakh vehicles have been recalled in Japan, 4.95 lakhs in North America, 1.41 lakhs in Europe and 9000 in China.
