Volkswagen Group has confirmed that the T-Cross will be launched in India by 2020.

Volkswagen Group is on the front foot as they are aiming at a 5 percent market share by the year 2025. In sync with this, Volkswagen has confirmed that the T-Cross compact SUV will be coming to India.

The compact SUV is still undergoing tests and the body has been camouflaged by a colourful wrap. But this doesn’t do much in hiding the exterior. There is a new, more premium looking front-grille and a new headlamp setup that also houses the DRLs. There are new square shaped fog lights too. On the side profile, like all Volkswagens, the design is simple and overall, the T-Cross looks well proportioned. In the concept that was displayed, Volkswagen had put a tail light that ran the entire car-width. The images don’t clearly show if that is present on the production vehicle too or not.

The Volkswagen T-Cross is reported to be around 4.1-metres in length. This will directly pit it against the very well performing Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. However, a sub-4-metre T-Cross cannot be ruled out for the Indian market as Volkswagen in known to not shy away from making two versions of the same model for different markets.

Like Volkswagen’s other cars that will be launched in India by the year 2020, the T-Cross will be built on the MQB-A0 flexible platform. The new Virtus and Skoda Rapid have already been confirmed to be based on that platform and the Polo too uses it.

The Volkswagen T-Cross is most likely to be offered with a petrol and a diesel engine option. The locally produced 1.0-litre petrol engine puts out 115 HP and 200 Nm of torque while the diesel engine produces 103.5 HP and 250 Nm of torque. The engines will be BS6 emission norms compliant.

No exact launch dates have been given but Volkswagen says that the T-Cross will be first launched in the European market followed by South America, China and then finally India. North America has been skipped as the compact size of the T-Cross will be a deterrent for Americans who like it big.
