Fiat Linea Classic Launch

Fiat has launched the Linea Classic in India, priced from Rs. 5.99 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi for the base petrol). The repositioned Linea is placed right between the Grande Punto and regular Linea. Fiat will launch a facelift of the Linea early next year, which gets all new interiors. To cut costs, Fiat has removed quite a lot of equipment from the Linea Classic. The automaker is targeting a different set of buyers and the lower specced model is likely to lure fleet operators. The Italian carmaker is promoting the Fiat Linea Classic as the longest car in its segment, measuring 4560 mm in length. The dimensions remain identical to the regular Linea and thus you get a mid-size sedan for sub 4-metre compact sedan money.

The Fiat Linea is positioned in the upper C-segment while the cut price Linea Classic is positioned in the entry-level C-segment, a volume spinner for all car companies present in this price point. The Fiat Linea Classic gets all black interiors instead of a dual-tone beige cabin. Fiat has opted for smaller 14-inch wheels with wheel covers coming from the Punto. The chrome bits have been removed from the car and Fiat has detuned the engine from 90 BHP and 209 Nm to 75 BHP and 190 Nm, the same output offered in the regular Punto. However the weight remains more or less the same which at 1200 odd kgs isn’t going to give the Linea Classic swift performance by any means of the imagination.

The Fiat Linea Classic is offered in three variants, 1 petrol and 2 diesel. All variants come with power steering, four power windows, tilt steering, manual AC, follow me home headlamps, rear armrest and multi-information display as standard. The base variants don’t get an audio system and steering mounted audio controls have been omitted across the Linea Classic’s range. The mirror adjustment is manual in all the variants.

The Linea Classic Plus gets integrated audio system (with CD/MP3 and FM functions) and ABS but airbags are not offered. The petrol Linea produces 89 BHP of power from its 1.4-litre FIRE engine while the diesel engine is claimed to be tweaked for better city drivability and uses a fixed geometry turbocharger. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and the Italian automaker offers a 3+2 years warranty on the vehicle. The Linea Classic is available in 5 colours.

Fiat Linea Classic Prices (ex-showroom, Delhi) –

* Linea Classic Petrol – Rs. 5.99 lakhs
* Linea Classic Diesel – Rs. 6.96 lakhs
* Linea Classic+ Diesel – Rs. 7.51 lakhs

The Fiat Linea Classic competes with the Ford Classic, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze and Mahindra Verito. However the Linea and Verito’s petrol engines lack punch and we won’t recommend them for those who want to drive on the highways frequently. The diesel engines of all the cars offer good performance although we are not quite sure about how the Linea Classic will perform with the lower output.

Petrol Sedan Price Comparison –

* Maruti Suzuki DZire – Rs. 4.93 – 6.44 lakhs
* Honda Amaze – Rs. 5.05 – 6.70 lakhs
* Mahindra Verito – Rs. 5.40 – 5.62 lakhs
* Ford Classic Petrol Price – Rs. 5.65 – Rs. 6.96 lakhs
* Fiat Linea Classic – Rs. 5.99 lakhs

Diesel Sedan Price Comparison –

* Maruti Suzuki DZire – Rs. 6.00 – 7.50 lakhs
* Honda Amaze – Rs. 6.09 – 7.70 lakhs
* Mahindra Verito – Rs. 6.38 – 7.28 lakhs
* Ford Classic Petrol Price – Rs. 6.93 – Rs. 7.97 lakhs
* Fiat Linea Classic – Rs. 6.96 – 7.51 lakhs

* all prices ex-showroom, Delhi. Prices listed in order of lower starting point.

    pricing needs thumbs up this time..

  • Anurag Kumar

    some interior piks Ariz Rizvi and are alloys available on classic plus diesel.

    • Anurag, we have updated the post with all the details. No alloy wheels available. Plus variant gets wheel caps, lower variants don’t get wheel caps.

    • Anurag Kumar

      Thanks faiz for the update.. :))

    • Anurag Kumar

      M happy i can Buy fiat instead of i20 asta now…

      Please don’t opt for classic unless it is being offered with discounts! Do some math, Linea Active has more features and 90HP engine, with discounts, it costs 7,15L ex showroom while linea Classic without discousts costs 7l5L ex. So, linea all the way! classic is fail show unless Fiat discontinues the current linea and bring in the facelift!

    • Siddhartha

      Hi Faisal do you think its a correct decision to degrade a premium product.Don’t you think with 75bhp classic would be a sluggish snail. Does fiat want to place this car in taxi fleet ?

    • Siddhartha, considering the 90 BHP Linea is slow, the 75 BHP version is going to be even lethargic, not such a good move.

  • Kedar

    I think is wrong pricing of Linea looking at features list and engine specs. It should have 40-50k cheaper for diesel Linea classic.

    I hope they will extend their 1 lac discount offer on Linea Classic as well.

    FIAT will sell Linea Classic along with regular 93ps Linea.

    Personally If I want Linea then I will go for Linea Active 93PS instead of 76ps Linea Classic+ as there will negligible price difference and its worth to pay few more grands for VGT Engine and premium interiors.

  • Ben

    still not satisfied with the pricing but the car looks good even with those wheel caps.

    Observation 1 : I see only 2 power window switches on Driver Door… So does it come only with Front Door Power Windows ? What about Rear Power Windows controls for Driver if it is all 4 door power windows ?

    Observation 2 : They should have offered USB plugin for the Classic Plus variant in the Music system.

    Observation 3 : 14 inch wheels looks very tiny on this car. They should have offered 15 inches for a car of this size.

    Observation 4 : Fog lamps doesn’t cost much. They should have offered it in Classic Plus variant atleast.

    Observation 5 : It should be atleast 50K less for the equipment they are offering, then it will bring good numbers for Fiat…

    Observation 6 : Why don’t they change the Headlights and Wiper switches to the actual Right Hand Drive cars… i.e Headlight switch on Right side and Wiper switch on Left side… How much does it take for the Engineers to redesign and place them in correct positions for Right Hand Drive countries ???

    • Yes, they have skipped on a lot of equipment but they are hoping the length will please buyers!

  • Ridip

    It was a good looking car already and now with that price tag its more than we can expect….hope the engine proves to be enough for this heavy beast…..

  • Pravin

    Theyve made an ordinary car more lousy!!

    It will be a bigger flop than the existing model…

    I dont have much hopes on the new upcomming model too…

    • Pravin

      Detuning the Linea diesel to 75Ps is a clear indication that new Linea would again have the regular 1.3 MJD with 90Ps instead of the much expected 1.6 MJD..

      Also Im wondering whats the fate of the brilliant T-Jet!!

      Looks like the T-Jet would no more be available with the Classic/ old Linea anymore and hence with the new model being dull in styling.. The brilliant combo of that classical styling and T-jet is finished!! very sad…

  • Siddhartha

    A regular complaint from linea diesel owner was that it was sluggish in performance.Now fiat has detuned the engine but the weight of the car remains the same. What does fiat want exactly ? to sell the car parallel to indigo.
    VW is launching new cars with more power and better features and fiat is degrading its fleet. Instead of giving linea 120 bhp MJD engine to compete with verna and vento they are degrading premium product to compete with manza and indigo. Very disappointing.
