Duster vs EcoSport vs Terrano Review

Shootout – Ford EcoSport vs Nissan Terrano vs Renault Duster

Price OTR Mumbai: Rs. 6.93-11.34 lakhs (Ford EcoSport), Rs. 11.68-15.13 lakhs (Nissan Terrano), Rs. 9.05-14.15 lakhs (Renault Duster)

Compact SUVs are definitely the flavour of the season, thanks to the practicality they offer.

A couple of years ago the concept of a compact SUV wasn’t that well known in India, mostly because there was no good alternative in the market. Buyers on a budget had only two options – Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio, which although not compact, came at an attractive price. However the big dimensions, unknown reliability and average dynamics made people shy away from SUVs. India being an SUV loving country immediately took to compact SUVs. It all started at the 2012 Auto Expo, when Maruti Suzuki, Ford and Renault showcased the XA Alpha, EcoSport and Duster respectively. While India’s largest car maker is yet to put its compact SUV on the roads, Nissan took a leaf out of Renault’s books by badge engineering the Duster, re-naming it as the Terrano. The Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano are three compact SUVs which are very popular but which one should you buy?

Duster vs EcoSport Terrano Test DriveDuster vs EcoSport Terrano Shootout

Styling – The Renault Duster has started to show its age, after all it has remain unchanged since the time of its global launch in 2010. The Nissan Terrano is unmistakably a Duster underneath, as can be seen in the dimensions and the side profile. However the changes made by Nissan on the Terrano have paid huge dividends, at least in the styling department and the vehicle looks extremely attractive and macho unlike the Ford EcoSport which does come off as a hatchback on steroids. The EcoSport has aggressive styling with good attention to detail but Nissan’s SUV elements on the Terrano do make it shine out on the road. The bigger dimensions and the inspiration from bigger Nissan SUVs make the Terrano our pick in the styling department.

Duster vs EcoSport Terrano-Performance ReviewDuster vs EcoSport Terrano Road Test ReviewDuster vs EcoSport Terrano User Experience

Interiors – Walk into any SUV and you will find a big difference between the three. While the EcoSport looks more contemporary with its big dashboard and comfortable seats, the Duster looks a bit too plain and the Terrano is right in between, offering both appeal and ruggedness. The EcoSport although well put together doesn’t feel as solid as the other two cars here. Quality in the Nissan is easily the best and the piano black finishing is certainly appealing. In terms of space, the EcoSport lags behind as both the Terrano and Duster offer abundance of room for both the front and rear passengers, even boasting of a bigger and more usable boot. The Duster and Terrano also lead when it comes to visibility while the EcoSport has quite a few blind spots. So in terms of cabin space, the Duster and Terrano are equally matched and better than the EcoSport, as you can easily seat five in the Renault-Nissan while the EcoSport is best for four passengers.

Where both the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano fail to impress are the ergonomics. Some of the button placements are ridiculously wrong and you take time to find them. The Ford EcoSport not only trumps the other two SUVs in terms of ergonomics but totally annihilates them when it comes to standard equipment. Although the Duster and Terrano are more expensive, they don’t offer the level of equipment which the EcoSport carries. The Ford comes with six airbags, button start, climate control, SYNC, leather seats, etc. The Terrano lacks steering mounted audio controls and touch screen audio system which is a shame as it’s pricier than the Duster which comes with these features. If there is any consolation then one must applaud Nissan for giving a driver side airbag as standard in all variants. Overall, the EcoSport is our choice for offering a more appealing cabin which is loaded with equipment but if you travel outdoors frequently, then the Duster is our pick (same interior room as the Terrano but with more features at a lesser price).

Performance – Before we dwell deep in the performance of these compact SUVs, let us crown the Ford EcoSport as the winner if you are looking for a petrol powered SUV. The 1.6-litre petrol engine powering the Terrano and Duster are no match for the award winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. That is the reason you don’t see any petrol powered Dusters on Indian roads. Ford’s pint sized mill is not only frugal but a complete hoot to drive and if you are on a budget, then the 1.5-litre Ti-VCT equipped EcoSport is considerably cheaper and better equipped too. The EcoSport is the only car here which comes with an automatic gearbox, that too the terrifically well engineered 6-speed PowerShift. So yes, if you want a petrol SUV, the EcoSport is by far the better choice amongst the three.

Both the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano are largely going to be sold in diesel avatar, that is the reason both companies offer just the base trims for the petrol model. The EcoSport has only one diesel engine while both the Terrano and Duster get two diesel engines each. When we compare the 85 PS diesel engine powering the Terrano and Duster against the EcoSport’s 90 PS unit, we find the Ford to offer better performance although not by much. The EcoSport’s gearbox is slicker shifting too and that tilts the favour towards the Blue Oval as the 85 PS Duster and Terrano have a notchy gearbox. However if you want a diesel SUV which never feels out of breath on the highways, the Duster/Terrano 110 PS is worth considering. They are priced significantly more but offer terrific high-end performance and give a definite shove every time you whizz past 2000 RPM. However you will have to deal with a heavy clutch and high turbolag which is a pain in stop-go traffic. Overall, when it comes to performance, the EcoSport is our pick.

Duster vs EcoSport Terrano Comparison

Driving Dynamics – The Duster and Terrano outshine the EcoSport when it comes to driving dynamics. The EcoSport isn’t your typical Ford and thus doesn’t handle like a train on rails but the Duster and Terrano do. Both these 4.3-metre cars have absolutely zilch body roll which make them very eager around the tightest of corners. Even the steering feedback on the Terrano and Duster is superior than the EcoSport but the only drawback is the vibrations which creep through the steering while cornering on bad roads. The EcoSport is fun but the Terrano and Duster are simply better when it comes to outright handling and steering precision.

All the three cars offer good NVH levels but the EcoSport is slightly better but the tyre noise is more audible in this sub 4-metre vehicle. The Terrano and Duster are also the better riding cars here and gobble up potholes with applaud worthy confidence. No matter how bad the road is, the Duster and Terrano don’t unsettle the passengers, while the EcoSport does feel a bit harsh. Braking performance is equally matched, the EcoSport has a better pedal bite but its front heavy and that makes it nose dive under heavy braking. No such feeling is felt in either the Terrano or the Duster and Dacia needs to be appreciated for the fantastic chassis balance.

Verdict – Seems like a tough choice deciding between these highly capable compact SUVs. While none will take you off-road, each will make your journey extremely comfortable in the city with their compact dimensions, small turning radius and frugal powertrains. Undeniably the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano are the bigger cars here, offering more interior room, better driving dynamics and fantastic ride quality. The EcoSport comes with more features, offers better engines and even after the recent price hike, is simply outstanding value for money. While Renault sold 50,000 units of the Duster after 10 months of launch, Ford has managed to get 50,000 bookings in just 3 months which shows how important value for money is in our country. Not to forget Ford has a bigger dealership network and although Nissan has more outlets than Renault, the latter has better after sales support.

The Terrano brings only styling updates to the table which makes the Duster look a bit old. But when Renault bring the facelifted Duster to our shores, the advantage being enjoyed by Nissan will be reduced. In their current form, the Terrano is the more appealing car but the premium is simply not justified. The difference between some variants between both cars is more than a lakh and that’s what finally tilts the verdict in the Duster’s favour. But when it comes to the overall winner amongst these three cars, the Ford EcoSport still remains on top, offering more equipment for around Rs. 2 lakhs less and that’s a deal very difficult to dismiss.

The Nissan Terrano is a more appealing package but when it comes to pricing, the Renault Duster offers the same performance with more features at a lesser price. The EcoSport outruns both when it comes to bang for your buck and thus emerges as the winner in this compact SUV battle.

As usual, a very nice comparison.. enjoyed reading the article…

  • Kedar

Bolo bolo kiski Ecosport hai woh :-)

EuroNCAP depicts Ford Fiesta is 5* and Dacia Duster is 3*, than comes LatinNCAP where EcoSports scores marginally high then Fiesta. So logically EcoSports is 5* and Duster is 3*. So, I’ll enjoy an assuring “thud” of this hatchback on steroid. Wish, Ford engineers provided the EcoSports with some more Ford’s Dynamic DNA.

“Compact SUVs are definitely the flavour of the season, thanks to the practicality they offer.” – What Practicality ? If anything Compact SUVs sell because they tickle people’s fancy of being seen with a Big & Stylish car which is affordable. They offer no practicality, none of these are true off-roaders and none can seat more than 5. A hatchback with decent ground clearance is all the people who buy these need in terms of practical use.

    • Vishnu, here is why we think compact SUVs are practical.

      1) Higher seating position – easy to get in, better view of the road ahead.
      2) Higher ground clearance – makes it easy to glide over our bad roads with amoeba shaped speed-breakers.
      3) Bigger boot than a hatchback – the Duster/Terrano have 475-litres of boot space, is there any hatchback which comes close to it?
      4) 4-wheel drive not necessary – how many need 4×4? Still Renault/Nissan and Ford have plans to bring 4-wheel drive versions in the future.
      5) Feel of an SUV, mileage of a hatchback – you feel you are driving an SUV but the vehicle doesn’t guzzle fuel like an SUV.
      6) Easy to park – small turning radius and small size makes it easy to squeeze these cars into the tightest of parking spots.
      7) High water wading capacity – 550 mm for the EcoSport, 350 mm for the Duster and Terrano.

Don’t you think Vishnu, that compact SUVs are more practical then similarly priced hatchbacks and sedans?

  • Pravin

Congratulations.. for being the first to do this comparo… really appreciate it…

The winner is quite obvious… as Ecosport, even in the worst case in favour of Duster/ Terrano, is 90% of their ability with 70-75% of their price… so its a clear winner…

    • Thanks Pravin.

By the way, very well put. The EcoSport is indeed 90% of the capability of the Duster/Terrano at 70% their price.

  • Ben

    Superb review and superb verdict.

  • Dharan

    HI Faisal,

That was a indeed a good comparison. I was the proud owner of ford fiesta 1.6 Sports petrol version.
I drove it for 5 years [ just 38K kms only officehome], After 5 years started giving me problems, bearing change is required, drive belts needs a change and wiper tank replacement.. etc. price of these spare parts are very high. Though Ford cars will have a stunning looks there is no re-sale value and also being a petrol car hardly anyone will take. I am getting calls from dealers to go for a new EcoSport with an exchange Ford Fiesta offer. You mentioned 50K booking of EcoSport. Out of these bookings, do you know.. how many will buy EcoSport and how many will cancel the bookings. I could get only 2.5 laks after selling my Ford-Fiesta which I bought it 5 years ago for 8Laks.

I was a Ford cars fan, I use to drive same car in US as well. So some how, For india, now looking at the petrol prices, re-sale value, mileage, space and comfort. I found Renault-Duster beats them all. I also looked at the Nissan-Terrano, not worth of another a Lakh just for different SKIN. I am going for top-end 110 PS Duster with Navigation Option with touch screen, without rear A/C vent and with leather seats. 14.63 Laks on the Road price in Bangalore [ This price excludes insurance and accessories, I bought both out of show-room]

Finally, apples and oranges cannot be compared. It is all about trade-off.

    • Dharan, people have also booked last year and a majority of them are ready to wait, so even if bookings get canceled, more people will be booking on a daily basis, although bookings for some variants is closed. Maybe you already being a Ford customer, the dealer can help you get the car quicker.

  • Ashish

Really appreciable comparison…congo!!! Ecosport any time beat the rest two…i am having fiesta and well verse with ford engine :)

  • Abhinav

    Great Comparo!
Sitting on the Ecopsort Diesel Titanium (O) booking since July 7, 2013 and the delivery date quoted is freaking February 2013! So, most probably going for the Duster now! Checked out Terrano as well, didn’t find it worth the premium over the Duster.
So, any suggestions/facts I should consider before moving to the Duster? Is the extra 1.5L worth it?

P.S. I found the door handles on the Terrano quite flimsy and of much lower quality than the Duster. Can you confirm this?

  • dep451

Will wait to see if maruti xa-alfa takes all of the above three…..

  • Rohan

@Faisal: Can you please compare 90hp sports PUNTO with diesel ford ecosport. I think it will make good comparison as punto can really give good competition to ecosport on fronts where ecosport has advantages over duster like : 1) Frugal and refined engine. 2) Bluetooth sync. 3) Build quality.

    • Punto much better car overall but EcoSport more practical.

  • S17

Undoubted verdicts about Ecosport VS Duster, booked Ecosport Titanium (D) even without second thought. Went for test drive after booking. Showroom guys took us for a rock and roll drive which thrilled us a lot. Went for test drive 2nd and 3rd time my family members, no one got impressed at all and didn’t even talk about test drive after that.

As it was the only other option went for Duster test drive. It happened to be service road next to under construction bridge. Showroom person rode very rashly, I drove smoothly without accelerating from 1st to 5th gear at 60kmph, crossed all the bumps, crossed the divider on highway, Duster crossed very smooth without any hick-ups. I parked Duster between two cars in crooked space in reverse just like that on first drive. After getting down no comments from family members. When we were going back in the same road to mall, they told we should have tested duster in this road to check the body roll. After crossing distance they realized and said we didn’t even find any pots while we came in Duster during test drive. In mall parking they saw people struggling to park branded car’s. Recollected how I parked Duster with family members in reverse with easy every one kept on taking about Duster for all the time we spent in mall. Ecosport has all (Except Airbag, Sync, Leather Seat, Steering mounted controls, keyless entry, cooler case for Shades, climate control, best audio system, 9 bottle holders, adjustable steering and seat, etc). All these are fancy things which will not even be used every second of the ride.

Clutch, mileage and suspension are used every second of the ride. With heavy heart I did last test drive before canceling Ecosport, till then I never sat at back seat, felt very crocked with lean 3 guys , showroom person drove the car in good tar road, driver side wheels alone went on very small bump, opps I felt the pain in spinal cord. I check with showroom guy in driver seat he confirmed that he too felt the same. Without any second thought canceled Ecosport. Government is laying underground drainage in my area. My neighbor with kids is thing before taking his Ecosport, where I zoomed with dust leaving behind with my family members in Duster. Verdict – decent clutch, competitive mileage(Eco 22 and Dust 20), best suspension. Ecosport missed suspension. Hence finalized Duster 85ps RxL.

I followed automobile golden rule, do not misses any one of it. 1) Soft clutch, 2) best suspension 3) competitive mileage among peers are the three golden rule. Hope this helps in finalizing and happy driving:)

    • ADI

Hi i find your review very nice and good… however i have a serious issue with the soft clutch u r talking about… Duster has one of the worst clutches in any segment… i would completely agree on the suspension part…but calling the clutch of duster as soft is hilarious… by the way… i own a Duster :)

  • Amber Mongia

Hi Faisal, I wanted to buy Ford Ecosport but it’s booking is closed so I m waiting for Maruti XA Alpha. Do u have any idea about its launch…..?

    Hi Faisal,
which is the better option(mileage, performance, comfort, maintaince, and over all look) to buy, eco sport or Nissan terrano.Actually i booked both the vehicles,im in a big confusion now which one will be better option.
Coming to price eco sport sounds super,Where as Terrano price is 2lakhs more, spending 13.2lakhs(mid varient) on terrano is it worth, because if i spend 1more lakh i have better options in other brands.(upcoming)

  • captain rik

the duster and terrano… same cars diff name..engine, handling and road behavioural characteristics, predictable, sound and solid although the turbo lag is irritating and the clutch can help develop ur leg muscles. eco sport may have an award winning 1 litre eco boost engine but u have to rev it hard to engage all the torque and boost with 5 people in it, and in doing so while overtaking or on decent slopes kills the mileage of the turbo petrol. diesel on the other hand is ok,(nothing bad to say). ergonomics…. ford loses hands down. not enough under thigh support, seats are like school benches..tiny, esp considering the stop start traffic. good supportive seats in both duster and terrano and more useable leg space. a hatchback on steroids is a perfect description of the ecosport. kudos on that. i just wonder how long will ford ecosport last wen the diesel jazz comes in. and also….. space in the ecosport is the same as that in a punto, jazz and i20;infact these hatches are much better n purpose built.

your report was fantastic, im a 6.3ft tall guy who test drives with 3 other 6+footers and all of us agree that the ecosport was a bit too much of a disappointment. good for the shorties in the country but there are better products…. oh n one more thing…. a good car doesnt need too many supplemental features. addnl and useless features point to only one thing…..ungood basics in a car, if you know what i mean(ride handling response and refinement). the ford could have been so much better for the price it comes for but well…….

p.s. just for some perspective on me…. i have been an owner of a m800, ford cortina, fiat punto, punto abarth, mazda rx7(fc,fd), nissan skyline gt25t, mitsubishi pajero, mistubishi diamante 3500, mistubishi legnum, toyota corolla ae86, corona2.2 sp and lastly honda civic si25r and vtec.

looking fwd to read YOUR review on upcoming cars. you do report more sensibly than most others i have read.

    • Thanks for sharing your feedback. Yes as far as driving goes, the Duster/Terrano are better but our market is very price sensitive and the aggressive price works in Ford’s favour.

    • dinesh

Tell me frankly which one is best if you exclude price band and fancy facility and compare pleasure and satisfaction of driving and all other aspect except price and fancy

    • Price aside, Terrano better.

  • Rajesh

I drive a ford ecosport leased by my company for me. My first drive to Kerala from Bangalore with my wifer and two kids in this compact suv was not a pleasant one I should say. The most annoying part in the cabin – the air con vents even when set a speed-1 sounds like an old hair dryer and the coooling isnt that great, so one needs to constantly set the speed to 3 at a minimum. On rough roads the vibration inside the cabin is irritating. On our return trip my mother joined us, my kids and mother in the back seats were definetly not comfortable with the hard and cramped seats. The engine isnt peppy and has a lag in 3rd and 4th gears. About the exteriors, the looks of the ford ecosport is pretty ordinary. Looks like Ford tried to package something to compete with the Duster in a hurry. Overall..I personally would not recommend this vehicle !

    • Rajesh Sharma

Bhaiya, Company ki di hui car hai kharab to algegi hi.

Agar kharid kar baithte to barhiya lagti.

Jaisi road hongi gaadi to vaise hi chalegi….. hai na……..

    Dear Faisal!
Good Job Buddy, nice suggestion, and comparison, i think best one is ford ecosport i Like that!

    Hi Faisal
your column was very enlightening. Grateful if you can offer advice on my confusion. I travel to my village, about 25 kms, every other day and the road is full of small potholes that you cannot avoid or drive slowly over. I have a buget of 9-9.5 lacs and am trying to decide between ecosport and duster, either that will not give me issues over constant driving on that road for 1-2 years. Would appreciate your advice.

  • Srinivasan

I think compact SUVs offer value, and also drive comfort. I saw few questions on what practical value a sub compact SUV offer than a sub compact sedan. My family has 3 cars, one is duster and two more D segment Luxury Sedans ( one stick shit, and another one automatic). Most of the time the car taken out of the garage is Duster once we bought it. It handles the speed bumps and martian craters of Bangalore city roads well, and also a decent car to drive in highway…my vote goes with Duster..

    • Yes, well said. Compact SUVs make way more sense.

  • dr. vikas agrawal

hi faisal….which is the best color in ecosports apart from white….thanks

  • dipesh arora

yes there is a 2 lakh difference between the ford ecosport
and renault duster. But ever since ecosport came and the sales of
the duster took a beating. U can save upto 1lakh on the price of a
duster if u buy one. In our town u can get upto 60k bonus for an
exchange of ur old car + dealer will happily give u about 20k
discount if u can bargain for it. So the difference comes down from
2lakh to about 1lakh… And u get a much bigger car instead of a
bulked up hatch(ecosport). +u get treated with respect which a ford
dealer wont do + no waiting for months.

    • Discounts will stop in the new year and Renault has announced a price bike as well.

  • VickY

    Thanks again

  • Manoj

True & intelligent comparison. Wondering you haven’t touched up on cost of owenership & fuel economy. Worth looking that too?

    • Ownership cost of Ford is less than Renault-Nissan. Fuel economy numbers are mentioned above.

  • raj

EcoSport or new upcoming honda jazz which one is the best..???????????

    • Can’t say till we drive the Jazz in India.

lovelly comparison faisal , i really appreciate , i have booked ford eco deisel basic model , and as per dealer i will get the delivery in first week of april , but as per my friends and office mates , they are forcing me to cancel booking of ford eco sports , they want me to go for duster base model , please advise me with the best choice , as the budget has been also disclosed , the govt has slashed down excise duty from 30 % to 24 % , so 6 % in total , i want you to suggest me with the best one, bcz i am going to keep me next car for almost 5 years.

    waiting for your prompt reply.

  • K.V.Raj

I did read your comparison of SUVs- Eco,Duster & Terrano. I am little confused.. I am 72+,self driving, want to buy SUV car only after Sep,2014 ,my budget is 10-12 L.Kindly suggest me which one I can buy among the above 3 or some other upcoming SUVs.AT is preferable

  • Rishi

I feel the Ecosport looks very Toyish. I completely agree that its just a bulked up Hatchback. While Renault went one step ahead creating a small Compact SUV, I think Ford took it to another level by creating even a smaller one that too with extremely toyish, strange looks. At times, it just seems like a larger Figo.
While you may feel great initially for saving Rs.2Lacs, you may rue this decision later, because you may not really get the SUV feel in the ecosport.

  • kapil

hi faisal, i’m plannin to buy either Eco sport TREND 1.5 petrol or duster RXE petrol. Now if u look at the prices, there isnt much difference between the two approx 25-30 thousand(after discounts from duster). i’m confused as what to buy. i’m also looking for good after sales service, maintanence costs, spare parts costs etc. plz suggest me.

    (Kindly mail me ur suggestions).

  • Anil Yadav

    Hi Faisal,
I have Figo and its a best car in its segment in terms of CC, power, speed, mileage. Now i want to switch to compact SUV.
Please help me to choose in between DUSTER or ECO Sports.
The car should be value for money

    Waiting for your reply.

  • manoj

Hi Faisal, u discussed Eco Sports, Duster & Terrano. If I want comparetiòn with Sakoda Yati. Then what is ur advice? Pl suggest me through mail.

    • New Yeti is coming, let’s wait till then.

  • ravish kumar

renault duster me automatic transmission aayega ya nhi?

I plan to purchase diesel SUV and cant decide between DUSTER ( High end model ) & Terrano same. Although the engine and other operative parts are same but how about suspension and other component which makes smoother ride.
Further the tentative date of launching the Maruti ALFA and whether this will better option than mentioned above. Whether these are planning to launch AT models
I can wait for further six months.
Please suggest my future course of action.

  • Hemant

    Hi Faisal,
I am a ford fan and have driven Figo and Ikon. Currently waiting for Honda vezel … Any idea on timelines.. Also Sx4 cross.
Any guidance details on these ?

Somehow not convinced on Ecosport as a Compact SUV..its more of a big small car !

  • Sachin

I took test drive of both ecosport or duster petrol base model liked duster becoz of space & ride quality. Also want to know when 1.2petrol engine coming whether in sept’14 I am willing to wait & want to approx. price

  • Guna

    Hey Faisal,
Really a very intersting comparison detailing each aspect. I likes it so much.
I like to drive only Automatic Transmission vechicles. I would like to buy best Automatic Transmission vechicle and my budget is 8 laks to 10laks. Please give me your view of my issue. Thanks. Guna

  • Ravirr

Car is good, but service and customer attitude is pathetic. We faced clutch problem just 2 months after buying the car – entire clutch is gone and Rs.13000 to replace. We are very experienced drivers and have driven many cars for >10 years without clutch problem, but the service center clowns had the nerve to blame the driver for the clutch problem. They should recall all Ecosports for clutch problem. They recalled the automatic gear version in Australia, but not in India. Shows the double-faced cheaters that Ford are!

  • Arjan Singh

I had a similar choice to make and chose the Ecosport and Im very happy about it.
