The 2018 Maruti Swift is expected to be showcased at the Auto Expo to be held in February next year and the production of the hatchback is likely to commence from 1st of December. Maruti is likely to produce the next generation Swift at Suzuki Motor’s new plant in Gujarat. Currently, the Swift is being manufactured at the Manesar facility in Haryana.

The current plant (Manesar) has an annual production capacity of 2,50,000 units and hence the decision to shift Swift’s production to Gujarat. The Baleno’s production could then be shifted to Manesar to optimise the use of space vacated by the Swift. The Baleno is currently being produced at Gujarat and approximately 550 units are made on a daily basis. Maruti continues to see a huge demand for its new models. The new Dzire has sold over 1 lakh units in just five months of its launch and still has a waiting period of 3-4 months. The Japanese automaker expects a similar kind of demand even for the Swift hatchback.

The first plant in Gujarat commenced operations earlier this year, the second plant is expected to go main stream by end of 2018 or in early 2019 and finally, the third plant is expected to become operational by 2020. Each plant will add a capacity of 2,50,000 units annually. Meanwhile, Suzuki has also acquired a land bank for the 4-6th plants in the vicinity which are currently being readied to meet the requirements of a lot more new models that are planned for a launch by 2020.

The 2018 Maruti Swift gets new styling on the outside and inside but features the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engines. Automatic gearboxes are expected to be offered with both the engines. Nonetheless, the new Swift is likely to be priced at a slight premium of around 5 percent over the current selling model.
