The exterior of the latest generation Maruti Wagon R has been revealed, retains the tallboy design.

2019 Maruti Wagon R Testing
The new generation Wagon R maintains the popular tallboy profile

The Wagon R was launched in India by Maruti Suzuki in 1999 and had instant success here owing to its tallboy design and the frugal engine. The car is in its sixth generation internationally while the Indian market got to see only two generations of this car. The last version of this car was introduced to us as Stingray.

Although, on 23rd January 2019, India will finally get its hands on the third generation Wagon R. In this set of undisguised pictures, it is seen that there is no similarity between the exterior of the India-spec Wagon R and its Japanese counterpart.

The 2019 India-specific Wagon R is seen with a rather evolutionary form of styling from the Wagon R currently in India. The 2019 Wagon R is letting go of the family-focused fascia with a redesigned bumper that has new air intakes and fog-lamp housing. The car also gets an angular headlamp cluster, giving the car a prominent appeal. A thick, horizontal chrome strip is also seen connecting the headlamps to the Suzuki badge in the middle.

The car gets brand new mirrors in a wing-like form that seem to be taken from the Ignis. The bonnet seems to be even more upright than the outgoing model while the side-profile of the car also becomes more dynamic with inward-swooping wheel arches. The tall pillars are retained to give the car its unique silhouette.

The rear-end of the car also seems to have gone through a series of major changes. The tail lamps are moved upwards and integrated with the pillars of the car, giving the Wagon R a more appealing look. The new Wagon R is based on the same platform as the old one, but it seems to be altered in order to make it longer and wider for more cabin space and luggage capacity.

The interior of the Wagon R will also see major changes as Maruti Suzuki plans to target a wider audience with this car. New features like SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Connectivity, along with a long list of safety features to comply with the upcoming norms are expected to be seen on this car.

Maruti Suzuki is also likely to offer reverse parking sensors, ABS with EBD, speed sensing door lock, high speed warning alert, ISOFIX child safety, dual front airbags and more so. The car might have the same engine. Although, 1.0-litre K10B three-cylinder petrol engine might be tuned for better efficiency.

The engine produces 67 BHP at 6200 RPM and 90 Nm of peak torque at 3500 RPM and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard while an AMT gearbox is available as an option. The new Wagon R is expected to be priced in the bracket of Rs. 4.3 lakhs to Rs. 5.6 lakhs.
