The Ford-Mahindra partnership involves Ford using Mahindra’s engines and co-developing two SUVs.

2019 Ford EcoSport Thunder Edition
The next generation EcoSport will get a Mahindra petrol engine

Ford and Mahindra’s partnership aims at developing two SUVs for both the Indian and global markets. The partnership also involves Ford using Mahindra’s engines in their models. The first model from Ford to house the Mahindra sourced engine will be the next-generation EcoSport.

Mahindra recently showcased its mStallion range of petrol engines at the 2020 Auto Expo. This includes a 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, and a 2.0-litre petrol engine all of which are BS6 compliant. These engines will be seen in the upcoming Mahindra vehicles and with Ford’s partnership, the mStallion engines will also found on some future Ford models.

The new 1.2-litre mStallion turbo petrol unit from Mahindra produces 130 HP and has 230 Nm of torque on offer. These figures are 20 HP and 30 Nm higher than the current turbo-petrol unit found on the XUV300. This 1.2-litre mStallion petrol unit will also make its way to the XUV300 as the XUV300 Sportz that was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo.

The Indian automaker has developed the mStallion range of petrol engines in-house at the Mahindra Research Valley’s R&D facility. The mStallion engines include technologies like direct injection and over-boost function. Mahindra claims that the mStallion range of petrol engines offer good efficiency and lower NVH levels.

The current 2020 Ford EcoSport line-up has already been updated with BS6 compliant engines. Other Ford models like the Figo, Aspire, Freestyle, and the Endeavour have also been updated with BS6 compliant engines. Mahindra’s mStallion range gets 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines and these will do duty in a variety of cars and SUVs.
