Kia Clavis Prototype

Kia Clavis, new sub 4-metre compact SUV is likely to be positioned below Kia Sonet

We broke the news of Kia Clavis trademark being registered in India last month. Now, we believe Kia has commenced testing of the Clavis as the prototype has been spotted for the first time.

Considering the design, we believe it is Hyundai Exter’s cousin in the making. Likely to be based on the same platform but it will have new styling details to differentiate the two products. It has a very squarish design language to make it look big and upright, just like the Exter.

The side profile spy shot reveals the unique B-pillar design, funky alloy wheels upright clamshell bonnet, black cladding on the fenders and high roof rails.

It will be positioned below the Kia Sonet as an entry-level product for the carmaker in India. Currently, the Hyundai Exter comes in the price range of Rs. 6.12 lakhs to Rs. 9.55 lakhs (ex-showroom). We believe, the Kia Clavis will be offered in the same price bracket.

The engine is expected to be the same – 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor producing 83 PS and 113.8 Nm torque. It comes with 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options. There are no other engine options to keep the price in check.

There is no official word on this product by Kia but we believe the Clavis will be revealed by the end of this year or early next year. It will put a big dent on the sales of its rivals like Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.
