The base L and V trims of the Maruti Celerio get safety features as optional and are priced at a marginal premium, improving the safety level on the hatchback.

2015 Maruti Celerio Diesel Review
The Celerio will soon get the LXi AMT (O) variant added to its stable

In a progressive step towards improving safety levels on all its cars, Maruti Suzuki has been steadily adding features on each of its models and the latest to join the lineup is the Celerio. The automaker announced that the AMT famed hatchback will now get ABS and dual front airbags as optional on the base L and V variants, making it standard across all trims (move comes in time of the Tata Zica being unveiled). Initially, the safety features were only available on the range-topping Z trim.

Maruti Suzuki also confirmed that the CNG equipped Green VXi (O) trim comes only with dual airbags missing out on ABS, whereas the LXi (O) trim will soon come with AMT. Launched in 2014, Maruti Suzuki has sold over 1.3 lakh units of the Celerio across India with the model consistently averaging around 7500 units every month. The hatchback comes loaded with all the essentials including Bluetooth telephony, steering mounted audio controls, tilt steering and an MID unit.

Specifications remain the same with power coming from the tried and tested 1.0-litre petrol as well as the new self-developed 0.8-litre twin-cylinder diesel engines. The company also offers the hatchback with a CNG equipped version, making it the only model in the segment to be offered in three fuel options. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual on both engines while the petrol motor comes with the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) available across all three trims.

Apart from the Celerio, Maruti more recently introduced ABS and dual front airbags as optional on the base variants of the Swift, DZire and Wagon R models, improving the safety levels on each of the vehicles. Compared to the non-safety equipped versions, the difference is a marginal sum in terms of pricing and certainly negligible considering its worth the life of the occupants. With almost all models equipped with safety in the company’s lineup, we expect the entry-level Alto 800 and K10 to get the same in the following weeks.
