An advertisement on Google shows that Maruti will introduce the S-Cross with a petrol engine option soon.

2017 Maruti S-Cross Facelift Mileage
The Maruti S-Cross is set to receive a petrol engine option soon

Diesel engines, because of their higher polluting nature are slowly beginning to face the heat from their petrol counterparts. Maruti seems to have taken notice of this as it is readying a petrol variant of its popular S-Cross model. The bite comes on the back of a NEXA ad on Google that says that the Maruti S-Cross comes with a diesel and a petrol engine option.

Currently, the Maruti S-Cross is offered with only a single engine option. This is the 1.3-litre diesel motor that produces 89 HP at 4000 RPM and a peak torque of 200 Nm at 1750 RPM. This is the same motor that does duty on the Maruti Ciaz. The engine also has Maruti’s mild hybrid technology known as the SHVS (smart hybrid vehicle system).

The new petrol engine will most likely be the upcoming 1.5-litre motor that will also be powering the 2018 Maruti Ciaz and the second-generation Maruti Ertiga. The petrol motor too will have the SHVS system for that added mileage and will put out 103.5 HP at 6000 RPM and 138 Nm of peak torque at 4400 RPM. This should help the S-Cross achieve higher speeds while also sounding more refined.

The new 1.5 litre petrol engine option will also bring down the price of the Maruti S-Cross by Rs. 51,000/-. This means that while the diesel variant starts at Rs. 8.61 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the petrol variant will sell at Rs. 8.10 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai) as claimed by the NEXA ad. The advertisement is not fake as it directs you to the official NEXA website. Since there’s no official announcement yet, this clearly means that the ad has been put up by mistake.

Even though the Maruti S-Cross sells in decent numbers of around 4000 units per month, the addition of the petrol engine will help the company increase its sales volume. Its rival, the Hyundai Creta which also happens to be the top-selling compact SUV in India is already offered with a petrol and a diesel engine option. The S-Cross will surely be looking to eat up into Creta’s share along with using the upcoming festive season to sell more.
