Premium bikes (250cc-750cc) segment is the next best bet for every 2-wheeler maker in India. Why do we say this? In FY 2016-17, a total of 6,76,227 units of premium motorcycles were sold in India as compared to 5,15,448 units a year before thereby registering a growth rate of over 31 percent (higher than the utility vehicles segment when it comes to 4-wheelers).

Royal Enfield currently rules the roost contributing over 90 percent sales to this segment. Bajaj announced its tie-up with Triumph to develop mid-size premium bikes for Indian as well as international markets. Mahindra has acquired BSA and will launch a premium range of Jawa motorcycles that will compete in the same mid-size premium bikes segment. TVS has its joint venture with BMW Motorrad and the Apache RR 310S (based on the Akula concept) will be launched in early 2018 from the TVS-BMW joint venture.

According to sources, the company has recently undertaken a major internal restructuring process. A new department has been created as part of this process. This department will primarily focus on overseas sales as well as current and future premium bikes which includes the current Apache brand.

The launch timeline of the BMW G310R and TVS Apache RR 310S have time and again been postponed. We hope that this new department will fasten things up and hopefully we could see both these bikes being launched soon. The Jupiter maker is also yet to introduce the ABS and FI variants of the Apache 200 and hasn’t given a confirmation on that as well. TVS are you listening?
