Renault Kwid ASEAN NCAP Test
Renault Kwid got 0 stars in the recently conducted safety test by ASEAN NCAP

In a recently conducted frontal crash test by the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN), the Renault Kwid failed with a total score of 24.68 points which translates into 0 stars (of a maximum 5). The tested car was a Made in India model.

The NCAP uses three categories – the adult occupant protection (AOP), the child occupant protection (COP) and the safety assist technologies (SAT) to calculate how safe the occupants in the car will be in case of a collision. These NCAP ratings get regularly updated to accommodate the new safety technologies coming in the market. The AOP category gets 50% weightage while the COP and SAT categories get 25% weightage each.

The Renault Kwid got a score of 10.12 points (of a maximum 36) in the AOP category, 14.56 points (of a maximum 49) in the COP category and failed to get a single point in the SAT category. The reason for the SAT debacle is that the Kwid has none of the ABS, ESC, seatbelt reminders, blind-spot assistance tech, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, collision warning system and other such drivers assist systems that the NCAP rates the cars for. The range topping Kwid too only gets a driver-side airbag and front seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters.

The Renault Kwid facelift will be coming in 2019 and Renault is contemplating the addition of a comprehensive safety package by giving it and enforced body shell, standard airbag and ABS. The reinforced body shell will help in absorb the crash crash impact and minimising its effect on the passengers.
